Personally, I've always assumed it just goes along with the territory. That is to say multi-tenured academic professors are authority figures, and thus, looked up to by their students, staff, and the rest of the faculty. Over time that wears off on a man or woman, and becomes part of who they are, and there's not much they can do about it.
