National organizations announced Thursday their efforts to get out the Hispanic vote for the 2014 legislative elections in states such as Arizona, Nevada and Texas.
Clarissa Martinez de Castro, representing the National Council of La Raza, said Thursday in a telephone press conference that one of the main engines pushing Latino voters to the polls is the immigration issue.
She said that organizations are working on different strategies to increase the registration of new voters focusing particularly in the Southwest.
"The Latino vote can no longer be ignored. It's estimated that about 900,000 Latino citizens in this country turn 18 each year and we want them to have the opportunity to register to vote and for their voice to be heard," said Martinez de Castro.
Meanwhile, Gail L. Kitch of the Voter Participation Center said that the conversation engendered by the possibility of approving immigration reform will spur efforts to increase electoral participation in 2014, when all 435 seats in the U.S. House of Representatives will be on the line.
In Arizona, which has enacted some of the most severe laws against undocumented immigration, voters next year will elect a new governor.
Therefore, organizations like Promise Arizona are constantly working to register Latino voters.
According to the organization, since Jan. 1, 2013, it has contacted more than 16,000 possible new voters and during August it will sponsor various events all over the country to promote the Latino vote. EFE
