VoodooShield

Antivirus developers often joke that if false positives weren't an issue they could create the perfect antivirus utility. To be sure of catching every virus, Trojan, and other malicious programs, they'd simply design a tool that blocks every program. It turns out that idea isn't as far-fetched as it might sound. For $19.99 per year, VoodooShield will work hard to block malicious programs not caught by your regular antivirus, while making it easy to whitelist your existing good programs.

Installation is quick and simple. After a necessary reboot, the product displays just two explanatory screens. One points out that by default VoodooShield remains in training mode when you're not using email or a browser, noting and whitelisting any programs you use. The other explains that when VoodooShield does block a program, you can manually whitelist it with a click.

Getting Started
Immediately after installation, VoodooShield runs in the turned-off training mode for ten minutes. This gives it a chance to notice and whitelist active processes. When that period ends, it offers to switch to SMART mode. In this mode, it remains turned off and learning until you launch an email client or browser. At that point it turns on and automatically blocks every program that isn't already whitelisted.

This default-deny mode is similar to the way TinyWall 2.1 handles firewall permissions. If a program isn't whitelisted, TinyWall simply won't let it connect, but it offers easy choices for whitelisting good programs.

Of course, some malware arrives via a route other than the browser. The well-known Stuxnet attack relied on USB drives to reach computers with no network connection, but Voodoo Shield is ready for just such an occasion. If VoodooShield is turned off when you insert a USB drive, it offers to turn on protection.

Anti-Executable 5.0 takes a rather different approach. Upon installation, it scans your hard drives and actively whitelists every program it finds. You can re-run this scan if needed; there's also an option to scan and whitelist programs based on the publisher that digitally signed them.

Where VoodooShield aims to take action only when the user is at risk, Anti-Executable is always active unless you put it in Maintenance Mode or enable Temporary Execution Mode. The former lets you install and whitelist updates; the latter just lets you run programs that would otherwise be blocked.

User Space Protection
It's possible that you might download a file (deliberately or due to a malicious website) that doesn't get launched until after the browser is closed. To handle that possibility, VoodooShield's SMART mode protects user-specific folders like Documents, Downloads, and Desktop. By default, a program launched from the user space will be blocked until you whitelist it.

Malware that's already on your system might be caught by the user space protection feature, but it might just as likely get whitelisted while VoodooShield is in training mode. VoodooShield isn't meant to replace your regular antivirus, but to work alongside it. It doesn't actively distinguish malicious programs from your valid applications. Before installing it, you'll want to give your system a full antivirus scan. If you haven't yet selected an antivirus for ongoing protection you can use a free cleanup-only antivirus like Malwarebytes Anti-Malware 1.70, Comodo Cleaning Essentials 6, or Norton Power Eraser.

The VoodooShield FAQ says the product "works great with most or all traditional antivirus software." It specifically recommends Webroot SecureAnywhere Antivirus 2013 as a super-lightweight complement to VoodooShield's own small resource footprint.

Scan with VirusTotal
Whitelisting a program that VoodooShield blocks is as easy as clicking on the notification, which pops up a big window that lets you allow or deny execution. If you're not sure whether to allow or deny, you can scan the file with VirusTotal first. Bought last year by Google, VirusTotal is a website that will run any file past more than 40 virus scanners and report their results. If it has processed the same file before, results come up almost immediately.

VoodooShield recommends blocking a program if even one of the 40+ antivirus scanners flags it. For myself, if I saw that just one or two had flagged the program, I'd scroll down to see which ones, and what they called it. A name like "Generic.Heuristic.123" or "Behaves.Like.Trojan" suggests at least the possibility that the antivirus accidentally flagged a valid program.

You can also launch a VirusTotal scan of any program simply by dragging and dropping it on the VoodoShield icon.

Former NCAA athletes win video game lawsuit against EA

TEMPE, AZ - OCTOBER 1: Quarterback Sam Keller #9 of the Arizona State Sun Devils passes the ball during the game against the USC Trojans on October 1,...

Quarterback Sam Keller of the Arizona State Sun Devils during a game against the USC Trojans on October 1, 2005 in Tempe, Ariz. Keller has successfully sued EA to stop using his likeness.

Electronic Arts' college sports franchises have been sacked by a U.S. federal appeals court.

In a 2-1 vote, the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals agreed with a lower court that EA had used the images in its video games of several ex-NCAA athletes without their permission in its NCAA football and basketball series. The decision comes two weeks after EA lost the rights to put the NCAA logo and name on its games beyond this year.

Circuit Judge Jay Bybee, writing for the majority of the court, said EA's game "literally recreates [Arizona State University quarterback Samuel] Keller in the very setting in which he has achieved renown."

Circuit Judge Sidney Thomas dissented, however, arguing that the games' creative elements "predominate over the commercial use of the athletes' likenesses" and that "Keller's impressive physical likeness can be morphed by the gamer into an overweight and slow virtual athlete, with anemic passing ability".

The decision could open up additional legal action against the video game publisher from other former college athletes who have been unhappy with their likenesses being used in the games without compensation.

In a statement, EA said it was "disappointed with the ruling against First Amendment protection in the Keller case. We believe the reasoning in Judge Thomas' dissent in that decision will ultimately prevail as we seek further court review."

(Read more: No porn please, we're British)

EA is already facing similar suits to the one ruled on today by the appeals court. The company asked a judge on Tuesday to dismiss the latest complaint, which was filed on behalf of a group of athletes led by Ed O'Bannon, a former star at the University of California, Los Angeles. Also, in May, a federal appeals court revived a similar suit from former Rutgers University quarterback Ryan Hart.

EA had argued in the case that using the athletes' likeness was protected under the free expression clause of the First Amendment. Judges disagreed in the case of college athletes, but?in a separate decision?agreed with EA in the case of former pro players.

The court unanimously upheld the dismissal of a suit by Hall of Famer Jim Brown, whose image was used in EA's Madden game.

EA has used the First Amendment argument before when facing legal action for images in its games. In 2011, Bell Helicopter parentTextron sued over the game maker's use of images of a trio of real world helicopters in "Battlefield 3."

Textron argued its choppers were used without permission and EA failed to pay licensing fees. EA claimed protection under the First Amendment and the use of the aircraft constituted fair use.

The case is still pending, though EA did lose an attempt to have the complaint dismissed a year ago.

(Read more:Xbox 180: Microsoft bows to consumer pressure, sets Xbox One free)

While the Madden franchise is a larger driver of revenues, EA still relied heavily on its NCAA franchise. But sales this year have been soft, say analysts. John Taylor of Arcadia Investment Corp. said he believes sales of the 2013 installment are off roughly 10 percent compared to the 2012 game.

And starting next year, the company won't be able to use the NCAA name. The league recently announced it would not negotiate a new contract with EA when the current one expires next June.

"We are confident in our legal position regarding the use of our trademarks in video games," the NCAA said at the time. "But given the current business climate and costs of litigation, we determined participating in this game is not in the best interests of the NCAA. ... The NCAA has never licensed the use of current student-athlete names, images or likenesses to EA. The NCAA has no involvement in licenses between EA and former student-athletes."

EA has vowed to continue making college sports games, however.

"Our relationship with the Collegiate Licensing Company [which manages the trademarks of the majority of the colleges in the game] is strong and we are already working on a new game for next generation consoles which will launch next year and feature the college teams, leagues, and all the innovation fans expect from EA Sports," said Andrew Wilson, executive vice president of EA in a statement.

Analysts say they don't expect the loss to have a material financial impact on Electronic Arts, noting that the NCAA was a co-defendant in the suit.

"The transgressor here is the NCAA, I believe," said Michael Pachter of Wedbush Securities. "I don't believe EA said to the NCAA 'can we use licensed images of the players.' The NCAA said 'no' and EA said 'we're going to do it anyway'."

"The NCAA has the right to license the athletes image without compensation to the athlete if he's playing in a [real world] game," Pachter added. "The question is: Can it exploit the likenesses out of the game? That depends on the contract the player signs with the NCAA."

'Smurfs 2' director on changing Jonathan Winters' life, not casting Ryan Gosling

By Brent Lang

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - The Smurfs are hitting theaters, and this time the group of bright-blue miniature mushroom dwellers are taking Paris by storm.

Based on the comics of Belgian artist Peyo and the popular cartoon television series they inspired, the Smurfs were a global smash when they first invaded the big screen in 2011. The family film racked up more than $560 million worldwide, making it one of Sony's most important franchises.

For "The Smurfs 2," which hits theaters Wednesday, the studio decided to stick with the formula that had brought such success the first time around and turned once again to director Raja Gosnell.

With both Smurfs movies and two previous Scooby Doo films, Gosnell has become perhaps the foremost interpreter of Saturday-morning cartoons in cinema today. He spoke to TheWrap about the liklihood of a third Smurfs outing, working with the late comedy legend Jonathan Winters on the voice of Papa Smurf and why audiences won't see Ryan Gosling cozying up to Smurfette any time soon.

"Smurfs 2" is one of Jonathan Winters' final film roles. What was it like to work with him? When he came in to do the first movie, he was feeling forgotten by the world. After the first film became a big hit, his entire attitude changed and he was just more positive and engaged with life. It was wonderful to see him get embraced by the public again.

We feel just blessed that he was able to do this film with us. Jonathan's warmth and the resonance of his voice -- its sincerity - he just was Papa.

Will it be difficult to envision another actor in the role of Papa Smurf if there is a "Smurfs 3"?

We don't like to count our Smurfs before they hatch, but if we are lucky enough to do "Smurfs 3," I assume that whoever takes over the role will have to reinvent Papa the way the Bond films have done. It won't be an impression of Jonathan.

What can fans of the Smurfs look forward to in this installment?

Gargamel is more Gargamelian, and the Smurf characters that fans loved the first time are back, but this film has a lot of heart and a lot more emotion in it. It's more complex. I think people are going to be surprised by how nuanced it is.

Why is it set in Paris?

French is the native tongue that Peyo created the Smurfs in so we wanted to honor that and take the Smurfs back to France. The Smurfs are such a big deal there that the French just opened up the crown jewels of Parisian architecture and we were able to film on the stage at the Paris Opera House and around the flying buttresses of Notre Dame.

How do you cast the Smurfs' human counterparts? You have an impressive list of actors like Neil Patrick Harris, Jayma Mays and Brendan Gleeson. Why did you think of them for this?

We set out to cast great actors with comedic skills, but we also wanted to find someone who the audience can believe is actually talking to a Smurf. It's not a science, it's just a gut feeling. But when I think of Jayma Mays, I can picture her talking to a Smurf.

Ryan Gosling or Ryan Reynolds, I don't know if those actors could seamlessly co-exist with the Smurfs.

You've directed two Smurfs films and two films based on Scooby Doo. Were you a huge fan of Saturday morning cartoons as a kid?

How did you guess? I was a huge, huge fan of Scoopy Doo and all the Warner Bros. cartoons. Any comedy timing I have is directly descendant from Chuck Jones.

If there is a third Smurfs movie, will you direct it?

Absolutely. I have fun every single day making these movies. My hope is that they will grow in the direction of the Harry Potter films and get deeper and deeper and that the audiences will grow along with us.

There are lot of stories to be told - and 50 years of Peyo's work to dig into.

More Jobs for Japan, But What About More Pay?

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe?s pro-growth administration has earned itself another gold star: the lowest unemployment rate in nearly five years.

Yet economists say the real measure of Mr. Abe?s success will depend more on whether an improvement in the jobs market will translate into higher wages and the greater spending needed to help put the world?s third-largest economy on the path towards long-term expansion.

The unemployed made up just 3.9% of the Japan?s work force in June after seasonal adjustment. That is the lowest level since October 2008, before the global financial crisis hit Japan?s economy, a government official briefing reporters said.

Economists say wages could rise if the number of those without a job keeps falling because companies will have to pay more to attract a shrinking pool of job-seekers. That would in turn put more money in consumer?s wallets, and support spending that could power growth. As household consumption makes up nearly 60% of total annual output, it is a major driver of economic growth.

But they say the jobless figure will have to fall to between 3.0% and 3.5% for that to happen, a feat easier said than done. The last time Japan?s unemployment rate touched 3.5% was in 1997.

Hidenobu Tokuda, an economist at Mizuho Research Institute, said non-manufacturing firms are likely already scrounging for workers, but that there are still too many workers looking for too few jobs in Japan?s traditional engine of growth, the manufacturing sector, where production is still recovering.

?It?s hard to envision a quick recovery,? he said.

Taro Saito, an economist at NLI Research Institute, said a sales tax hike due in 2014 could also delay a recovery in the jobs market and an improvement in base pay.

?The sales tax hike will make the unemployment rate tick up temporarily as companies scale back due to a drop in demand,? he said. ?Wages will likely rise due to higher overtime pay and bonuses, but those are only a small part of overall compensation, and it could take years for overall wages to improve? thanks to a stronger labor market.

Latest Verizon Galaxy S4 Build (VRUAME7) Rooted, Power Users Still Waiting On Unlocked Bootloader

If you updated your Verizon Galaxy S4 to the latest over-the-air build, or bought one after it was already installed, you might already be aware that it's been especially resistant to root attempts. Savvy power users have stayed well away from the updated VRUAME7 firmware, which makes rolling back to an earlier build impossible. But as is so often the case, two enterprising XDA-Developers posters have solved at least some of the problems, and released a new rooting method for the latest OTA.

The exploit comes from XDA members hiikezoe, DoomLoRD, and PWM978, among others. It's a bit unconventional: you'll need to use a custom-formatted MicroSD card with the root exploit files loaded up, plus a terminal emulator on the phone itself. The process isn't all that difficult if you're used to the more typical forms of rooting (as opposed to one-click solutions and the like) but it's clear that this technique took a lot of work. You'll want to follow the steps in the XDA post to the letter.

While this will restore access to root apps for those running the latest Verizon firmware, these users are still out of luck when it comes to an unlocked bootloader, and the wider custom ROM capabilities that come with it. At the moment there's also no custom recovery option. Locked bootloaders are notoriously difficult to work around, and while developers have become better at cracking them, it's certainly possible that no solution will be found. There's currently a $3,915 community bounty being offered for a full modding solution.

As always with this sort of thing, it's best not to proceed if you want to hang on to your warranty. If you're ready to take the plunge, hit up the source link below for the necessary files and instructions.

Treasury's Lew: Congress needs to pass debt limit

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Congress needs to raise the debt limit and take away the "cloud of uncertainty" about the nation's ability to pay its bills, Treasury Secretary Jack Lew said in an interview broadcast Sunday.

"The fight over the debt limit in 2011 hurt the economy, even though, in the end, we saw an extension of the debt limit. We saw confidence fall, and it hurt the economy," Lew said on NBC's "Meet The Press." :Congress needs to do its job. It needs to finish its work on appropriation bills. It needs to pass a debt limit."

Senior lawmakers on Capitol Hill are trying to come up with must-do legislation to keep federal agencies running after Sept. 30 and prevent the possibility of a government shutdown. At issue is what is normally routine: a plug-the-gap measure to fund the government for a few weeks or months until a deal can be worked out on appropriations bills giving agencies their operating budgets for the full 2014 fiscal year, which begins Oct. 1.

However, some Democrats don't want to vote to continue to fund the government at new, lower levels mandated by the automatic, across-the-board spending cuts known as sequestration. And some conservatives are making a last stand against President Barack Obama's new health care law. In addition, Senate Democrats are resistant to a $20 billion spending cut sought by many Republicans.

The issue has divided Republicans between those who think it's appropriate to use the threat of a government shutdown as a negotiating tactic, and those who don't.

Rep. Peter King, R.-N.Y., said Republicans should be searching for ways to de-fund or repeal the Obama health care act. But he called threatening to shut down the government "terror politics" and said the strategy wouldn't work. Others have worried that the gamesmanship could cause Republicans to lose control of the House.

Some observers say it's an idea doomed to fail anyway, since Obama brings both a veto pen and the White House podium to the battle.

"We should not be closing down the government under any circumstances," King said Sunday on CNN's "State of the Union."

Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, has taken just that tack, rounding up fellow conservatives to pledge to oppose any budget extension that funds implementation of the health care law. Sunday, he said it was unfair to implement a law that many Americans don't want and that still has wrinkles that need to be ironed out.

"I understand that there's some in the Washington establishment, some from both political parties, that weren't happy with me over this," Lee said on "Fox News Sunday." ''And in this instance, I'm going to take that as a compliment, an indication that I'm doing something right."

"The fact is that we can delay this bill," he added. "And if we can delay it, we can stop its consequences, at least for now."

Lew maintains that the president won't negotiate over the debt limit.

"The mere fact of negotiating over the debt limit, after 2011, would introduce this notion that somehow there's a question about whether or not we're going to pay our bills, whether or not we're going to protect the full faith and credit of the United States," Lew said on ABC's "This Week with George Stephanopoulos." ''Well, it's not OK to default. Congress can't let us default."

"(Congress) has to stop looking for what's the last possible moment," Lew told "Fox News Sunday." ''They should get back after they take their time off in August and they should finish their work and get it done so that there's no uncertainty about America's ability to pay its bills."

Separately, Lew said no federal bailout is in the works for the city of Detroit, which recently filed for bankruptcy protection. Pressed as to why the government chose to bail out big banks, the auto industry and others, but isn't assisting the city, Lew said on CNN's "State of the Union" that the government has been giving Detroit technical advice and has made resources available to help take down blighted properties through federal programs.

But Lew said that the situation during the financial crisis that warranted the other bailouts was "unique," and that the current problems that Detroit has with its creditors, "it's going to have to work out with its creditors."

Judge: Fed chair Bernanke should be deposed in AIG bailout case

Federal Reserve Board Chairman Ben Bernanke testifies before the Senate Banking, Housing and Urban Affairs Committee July 18, 2013 in Washington, DC.

Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke should testify in the lawsuit by American International Group Inc's former chief Maurice "Hank" Greenberg against the United States over the insurer's 2008 bailout, a judge ruled on Monday.

Judge Thomas Wheeler of the U.S. Court of Federal Claims rejected the government's effort to keep Bernanke from being deposed, saying the Fed chairman was a "central figure" in the decision to bail out AIG.

"Indeed, the court cannot fathom having to decide this multi-billion dollar claim without the testimony of such a key government decision maker," Wheeler wrote. "These facts constitute 'extraordinary circumstances' for the taking of Mr. Bernanke's deposition."

(Watch: Who will succeed Bernanke?)

Greenberg's Starr International Co, which once had a 12 percent stake in AIG, is suing over the government's taking of a 79.9 percent stake in the insurer in September 2008 and a separate 1-for-20 reverse stock split in June 2009.

Greenberg's attorney, Alanna Rutherford of Boies, Schiller & Flexner, said his team was pleased with the judge's decision.

Earlier this year Greenberg tried to force AIG to join his suit against the government over the $182.3 billion bailout, an effort the company ultimately rejected.

Greenberg is seeking tens of billions of dollars in compensation over the losses he incurred when the government rescued the company.

"Because of Mr. Bernanke's personal involvement in the decision-making process to bail out AIG, it is improbable that Plaintiff would be able to obtain the same testimony or evidence from other persons or sources," Wheeler wrote in his four-page order.

Wheeler said the court would extend "appropriate deference and courtesies" to Bernanke in scheduling the testimony; the judge also said he would attend the deposition himself.

It is tentatively scheduled for Aug. 16, the order noted.

Reuters contributed to thisreport.

Woman sues Equifax: Are credit report mistakes worth $18 million?

Woman sues Equifax: After spending two years trying to get Equifax to fix mistakes on her credit report, an Oregon woman sued. On Monday, a jury awarded her $18.6 million.

By Associated Press / July 29, 2013

A federal jury in Oregon awarded $18.6 million to a woman who spent two years unsuccessfully trying to get?Equifax?Information Services to fix major mistakes on her credit report.

Julie Miller of Marion County was awarded $18.4 million in punitive damages and $180,000 in compensatory damages, though Friday's award against one of the nation's major credit bureaus is likely to be appealed, The Oregonian reported.

The jury was told she contacted?Equifax?eight times between 2009 and 2011 in an effort to correct inaccuracies, including erroneous accounts and collection attempts, as well as a wrong Social Security number and birthday. Her lawsuit alleged the Atlanta-based company failed to correct the mistakes.

"There was damage to her reputation, a breach of her privacy, and the lost opportunity to seek credit," said Justin Baxter, a Portland attorney who worked on the case with his father and law partner, Michael Baxter. "She has a brother who is disabled and who can't get credit on his own, and she wasn't able to help him."

Tim Klein, an?Equifax?spokesman, declined to comment on specifics of the case, saying he didn't have any details about the decision from the Oregon Federal District Court.

Miller discovered the problem when she was denied credit by a bank in early December 2009. She alerted Equifax?and filled out multiple forms faxed by the credit agency seeking updated information. She had found similar mistakes in her reports with other credit bureaus, Baxter said, but those companies corrected their errors.

A Federal Trade Commission study earlier this year of 1,001 consumers who reviewed 2,968 of their credit reports found 21 percent contained errors. The survey found that 5 percent of the errors represented issues that would lead consumers to be denied credit.

Internet Marketing Solutions: Dealing With The Fear Of Commitment

Submitted by: Andy Eliason

Fear of commitment. To some degree we've all experienced it. Relationships are a difficult thing, whether they are social relationships or business relationships, we still have some natural hesitancy to fully commit to someone or something. As you search for Internet marketing solutions, from a company or packaged as software tools and applications, a little fear is a good thing. But if your fear controls you, the right Internet marketing solutions might pass you by.

Internet marketing solutions come in many shapes and sizes, and many times they will be accompanied by Claims or, even worse, Guarantees. And, when it comes to Internet marketing solutions, Claims and Guarantees should cause more fear than Commitment does. So in the instances where these solutions seem held up by Claims and Guarantees, treat them as you would any other relationship that seems too good to be true ? with skepticism and a healthy dose of paranoia.

Common wisdom has taught us all through the years that things which seem too good to be true probably are. Internet marketing solutions are no different. A Guarantee that a company can get you a number one ranking or claim that they will put you at the top of Google within a given time frame definitely fits into this category.

Google itself tells you in their Webmaster Help Center that no one can guarantee a #1 ranking in Google. And, for better or for worse, the people who are making Google work are a lot smarter than most of us. So in these cases of Claims and Guarantees it's okay to let your Fear guide your decisions.

Which is not to say that all of those promises are blatantly false. It really could be that some of those companies have a ?system? or ?method? that will get you to the top of the search results, but, strangely enough, the guarantees don't seem to include the length of time you will remain at the top. And it probably goes without saying (but I'm going to say it anyway) that they also very specifically don't guarantee that you won't get banned.

And when we look at it this way, at least we can say that our Fear of Commitment is not completely irrational. Companies that employ unethical Internet marketing solutions can get you to the top. They can also cause irreparable harm to your business and reputation.

At the same time, if you want to succeed on the Internet you have got to face your fears, cope with your hesitations, and confront your worries. (And any other encouraging statements you feel might apply.) Because not every company is like that, and there are a number of ethical, established, and proven Internet marketing solutions, and the right Internet marketing company can help you build a powerful web presence and improve your overall marketing strategy.

A couple methods that are common practices in Internet marketing include search engine optimization (SEO) and Pay-Per-Click (PPC). Both require skilled and knowledgeable application, but both can help you develop your online strategy and work your way up the search engine results.

However, SEO is not a quick or instant method. It takes time. And we've already discussed how the companies that promise instant SEO are justifiable sources of fear. Unfortunately a company's fear of commitment can often influence decisions when, in fact, you should be standing up to your fears. Fear enters corporate mentality when things don't progress as fast as they think it should. The wrong expectations can create the kind of fear that leads to bad decisions.

We can draw the same analogy to social relationships. How many of them have gone south because, even though both parties want the same outcome, they let their different expectations about how to achieve the end result destroy their chances of getting there. If you want to succeed it takes time. And more importantly, it takes commitment.

The moral of the story: Don't let your fear of commitment stop you from trying to find the right Internet marketing solutions. Not every relationship is going to work out on your first try, but if you really want to achieve the best possible outcome, you'll keep at it until the method and the achievement are exactly what your business needs.

93% Fruitvale Station

All Critics (123) | Top Critics (43) | Fresh (115) | Rotten (8)

It's hard not to watch Fruitvale Station with a coiled dread... Yet, Coogler's greatest achievement may be in reminding us that Grant was a work in progress with people who loved him in spite of his flaws and because of his hopes.

We feel the death on the platform so acutely not because it's a stupid act of randomness, but hardly untypical racist violence, but because we've come to love this man.

Michael B. Jordan (The Wire and Friday Night Lights) plays Oscar with the heart and compelling charm required to make us feel close to him.

It's a story of one young man's tragedy, a story that resonates with so many other tragedies. Oscar Grant wasn't some mere symbol; this film makes him flesh and, unfortunately, blood.

An eloquent memorial for a man who barely experienced life, and a haunting reminder of how quickly it can be lost.

Some of this narrative feels cliched, but Coogler and his actors make it work by leaning toward understatement.

As Grant, Michael B. Jordan's stunning good looks and immaculately restrained acting affects even those who don't want to be manipulated-who want to watch this story with unfogged eyes.

Without emotion-tweaking music or too much fictional streamlining and highlighting, he captures a sense of the random and pointless horror of a young man shot in the back while laying on his stomach

...writer-director Ryan Coogler and his actors do such a good job the film is consistently compelling despite its predestined finale.

after seeing Fruitvale Station you should come away with the impulse to muse on the life behind the next tragic homicide in the news that sparks debate ...

The film is both personal and universal. Jordan can be so touching, and his intimidating ferocity is palpable. This is an important picture with a breakout performance.

Fruitvale Station's arrival in theaters corresponds with the outcry over the Trayvon Martin case. But Fruitvale did not need added relevancy to be remarkable.

Fruitvale Station is a heart-rending stop; just remember that the line doesn't end there.

Was Oscar Grant going to turn his life around? We'll never know because of a pointless act of violence.

Coogler's take quietly serves to show Grant as a human being, with his flaws and redeeming qualities, and not just as a face in a newspaper obituary.

...a palpably low-key premise that's employed to continuously engrossing effect by first-time writer/director Ryan Coogler...

'Fruitvale Station' is a movie people are going to be talking about and it's a conversation you don't want to be left out of.

You wonder if Coogler would have felt freer had Grant somehow lived that night, if the director weren't put in a position where he felt the need to honor the dead by bringing him to dramatic life. But he believes in his ambition.

Many recent movies so cavalierly dispense thousands upon thousands of ammunition rounds, you can sometimes forget the effect that one bullet can have on human life.

A tragically relevant and incredibly important film that deserves all the attention it can get from American audiences.

What's presented here is good, and it's an important film to see for its coverage of the subject matter that unfortunately is still making headlines. (Full Parental Review also available)

Benefits immeasurably from its piercing lead performances, stumbling only in its over-eagerness to make its points.

MSNBC's Paid Black Goldie Taylor Calls Competitor Network CNN Don Lemon A "Turn Coat" For Agreeing With Bill O'Reilly About Black Culture - Neither Has To Talk About "The Stolen Black Community Governance Culture"

Mediaite

None of Goldie Taylor's PAID CO-WORKERS on MSNBC will ask her to tell them WHAT Don Lemon has "Turned Against" per his comments.

The truth is that Goldie Taylor is NOT enforcing "Black Community Institutional Integrity" or protecting the "Black Community Governance Culture". ?She and her co-workers are agents of PROGRESSIVE-FUNDAMENTALISM that has PERMANENT OCCUPATION inside of the "Black Community Consciousness Nucleus".

It runs upon POPULARISM among the CONGREGATION rather than upon its ability to DEVELOP ORGANIC COMPETENCIES WITHIN BLACK PEOPLE that invest their valuables within it.

THE NEWS MEDIA: THE BOUNCERS OUT OF CAMERA VIEW WITHIN THE BLACK COMMUNITY THAT KEEP THE "AMERICANIZED NEGROS" FROM PULLING EACH OTHERS FAKE HAIR OUT

When you all watch:

  • "Cheaters"
  • Jerry Springer
  • "Love And Hip Hop With Basketball Wives From Atlanta Who Love New York"

do you notice the BOUNCERS that are off camera to break up the fights with the IGNORANT AMERICANIZED BLACKS on the stage?

This same behavior has entered into the "Cable News / Opinion" scene.

This time "Mediaite" proves to be the big muscular White man that keeps order as the Black people try to scratch each other's eyes out on video tape.

Mr Lemon you had thrown into your lap the argument that "EVERY RACE OF PEOPLE KILL THEIR OWN KIND". ? You have never heard an effective rebuttal of this fraudulent diversion and thus you botched it.

BLACK PEOPLE are 13% of the US population proportion yet are homicide victims at 47%. ??

The IRONIC POINT is that this factoid undercuts the SUPERIORITY of the "Stand Your Ground Law" as a primary focus.

Since so few Black people are killed by a White person who later successfully receives exoneration based on "Stand You Ground" - the ONLY THING that an INTELLECTUALLY HONEST PERSON can conclude is that this is all done for the purposes of CONGREGATIONAL UNITY and MOBILIZATION - but ultimately to compel the GREATER SOCIETY to have RESPECT FOR BLACK LIFE that THE BLACK COMMUNITY GOVERNANCE CULTURE has failed to instill AMONG BLACK PEOPLE to other BLACK PEOPLE.

DEAR LARRY ELDER - SAVE YOUR POLITICAL RONALD REAGAN TALKING POINTS

You are every bit the POLITICAL CONFIDENCE MAN as the "Embedded Black Fox Confidence Man" Progressives. ? With the same intentions - you merely lack the "congregational following".

Your political theories about Ronald Reagan are not able to bring Structural Benefit to any other group within the Black Diaspora - for the very same reasons as the one's espoused by ?your Black Progressive adversaries: ?The are all 100% "Made In America" and would DIE if attempted elsewhere.

At a time when POLITICAL OPPORTUNISM that induces the "Americanized Negro" to VOTE FOR HIS SALVATION is at an all time high - WHY would you frame BLACK COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT in terms of RONALD REAGAN'S POLICIES? ? (If your agenda is anything other than creating BLACK REPUBLICANS)

Pope tells clergy to go out on the streets and help the poorest

By Philip Pullella

RIO DE JANEIRO (Reuters) - Pope Francis told Catholic clergy on Saturday to leave their comfort zones and smug surroundings and reach out to serve the poor and needy.

"We cannot keep ourselves shut up in parishes, in our communities, when so many people are waiting for the Gospel," he said in the sermon of a Mass in Rio's cathedral on the penultimate day of his trip to Brazil.

Since his election in March as the first non-European pope in 1,300 years, Francis has been prodding priests, nuns and bishops to think less about their careers in the Church and listen more to the cries of those hungry to fill both material and spiritual needs.

"It is not enough simply to open the door in welcome, but we must go out through that door and meet the people!" he said.

Known as the "slum cardinal" in his native Argentina because of his austere lifestyle and visits to poor areas, Francis made a clarion call to clergy to take risks and go out among the faithful who need them most.

"It is in the 'favelas' and 'villas miseria' that one must go to seek and to serve Christ," he said, quoting the late Mother Teresa of Calcutta and using the terms used in Brazil and Argentina for shantytowns.

Francis has set the tone in the Vatican, rejecting the lush papal residence his predecessors used in the Apostolic Palace and living instead in a small suite in a Vatican guest house, and often eating in the common dining room.

In some of his early outings from the Vatican he has chosen to visit those in need. Shortly after his election, he visited a jail for minors and his first trip outside Rome was to the southern Italian island of Lampedusa to pay tribute to immigrants who have died trying to get to Italy.

Millions of people have turned out to see the Argentine pope since his arrival on Monday for events surrounding an international jamboree of Catholic youth, known as World Youth Day.

In his sermon in the ultra-modern cone-shaped cathedral, Francis hammered home the need for priests and nuns to go out on the streets and into the rough neighborhoods.

"Let us courageously look to pastoral needs, beginning on the outskirts, with those who are farthest away, with those who do not usually go to church," he said.

On Friday night at a rally on Rio's famed Copacabana beach, he urged young people to change a world where food is discarded while millions go hungry, where racism and violence still affront human dignity and where politics is more associated with corruption than service.

He ordered his open-sided popemobile to stop numerous times along his 1.8-mile (3-km) route so he could kiss babies and shake hands. He got out several times to walk along the route, making his security detail nervous again.

Since his election in March, the pope has taken strong stands in defense of the environment and has several times said that financial speculation and corruption kept millions of people hungry.

During a visit to a Rio slum on Thursday, he urged residents to not lose trust and not let their hopes to be extinguished. Many young people in Brazil saw this as his support for peaceful demonstrations to bring about change.

At the slum, he issued the first social manifesto of his young pontificate, saying that the world's rich must do much more to wipe out vast inequalities between the haves and the have-nots.

The first Latin American pope is clearly relishing the enthusiasm at a time when the Church, which once was an unrivalled religious bastion on the continent, is grappling to hold onto faithful.

The final event of World Youth Day is Sunday, when Francis presides at a closing Mass before returning to Rome that evening.

Ft. Hood Shooter: U.S. Military at War with My Religion

27 Jul 2013, 9:26 AM PDT post a comment

Acting as his own attorney in his trial over the shooting that killed 13 and wounded more than 30 others in November 2009, Hasan says he regrets his time in the U.S. Army and describes the War on Terror as "illegal and immoral":

I would like to begin by repenting to Almighty Allah and apologize to the (Mujahideen), the believers, and the innocent. I ask for their forgiveness and their prayers. I ask for their forgiveness in participating in the illegal and immoral aggression against Muslims, their religion and their lands.?

Releasing the statement to Fox News, Hasan bemoaned his ties to the U.S. Army: "My complicity was on behalf of a government that openly acknowledges that it would hate for the law of Almighty Allah to be the supreme law of the land."

Attorney Neal Sher, who represents victims of the?Ft. Hood shooting, responded to Hasan's statements by saying, "This is yet a further confirmation of a fact that everyone knows except our government. That is, the Fort Hood shooting was a terrorist jihadi attack."

Hasan's court marshal begins August 6th.?
