I really enjoyed reading the article by Don Tyler titled ?Working with Family ? Hiring (and Firing) Family Members in this month?s Feedlot magazine (pages 36, 38).? It reminded me of the unique challenges that family businesses must face ? whether it is a family farm/ranch or any other type of business.? Intra-family dynamics can seriously affect the day-to-day operations of a family business and can impact hiring/firing decisions.?? It also reminded me of the blurry line between independent contractors, employees and general partners in family businesses (I will delve into this topic in a different post).
I suggest reading Mr. Tyler?s article regarding hiring and firing family members.? I also suggest seeking counsel on employment law issues from an attorney licensed in your jurisdiction to obtain advice specifically tailored to your situation.? These types of issues also overlap with estate/succession planning for a farm or agri-business.

Earlier this week, we tried our hand at picking the winners for the 2011 MTV Video Music Awards, but with the big show just around the corner -- airing live from Los Angeles this Sunday at 9 p.m. — we figured it was time to let the pros have their say.

A wireless system for when disasters hit
One of the first things to disappear in the wake of a major disaster is reliable communication. Without access to cell phone service or the Internet, it's difficult for first responders ? or anyone who wants to help out ? to speak with each other. And while satellite phones work in these situations, they're too expensive for many first responder organizations to purchase en masse.
Now, researchers from Georgia Tech College of Computing claim to have developed a cheap, easy solution: LifeNet, a piece of software that allows people to communicate after disasters, even if landlines, cell phone networks and the Internet are all down.
"It's just a piece of code that you can have on your laptop or phone. Once you have the software, the computers can communicate with each other, and you don't need infrastructure," says Santosh Vempala, the Georgia Tech computer science professor in charge of the project.
Any device that has LifeNet installed acts as both a host and router for the network ? meaning the software can route data both to and from any other LifeNet-enabled device. You can read more technical details here.
A group of people using the software can all communicate with each other (texting is the easiest way), but if even one person on the network has access to the Internet, everyone else can access it, too ? though the connection probably wouldn't be strong enough to do any powerful surfing, like stream video. And if one user has a satellite phone, the whole network can use its services.
There's just one catch: Users have to be within range of each other. Outdoors, this could mean up to a kilometer. Indoors, users may have to be as close as a few hundred yards. But as Vempala notes, "you could have a line of people on this network that are spaced 100 yards apart, and the line could go as long as you want."
Hrushikesh Mehendale, one of Vempala's former graduate students, plans to bring LifeNet to market. The software will be free, he says, but users will have to pay for specific applications (i.e. text messaging). Still, the cost will be cheap compared with satellite phones, which cost up to $600 a pop and charge 50 cents per text.
Vempala and Mehendale have already tested LifeNet with the FAA, which found that it was able to run all of its operations on top of the network. The researchers also recently partnered with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences in India, which will help deploy the service in communications-poor areas that have been hit hard by recent cyclones.
And the software isn't just useful in disaster situations. It could also be used in any region that lacks a reliable communications infrastructure. "The next thing is to get real users. We plan to find critical scenarios where we identify real need," says Mehendale.

Hopes for another Fed rescue drive 3 percent rally on Wall St (Reuters)
NEW YORK (Reuters) -Stocks shot 3 percent higher on Tuesday on speculation Federal Reserve Chairman Ben Bernanke this week would signal new help for the economy, giving investors hope a four-week rout was nearing an end.
Weak data in housing and regional factory activity triggered the latest round of bets that Bernanke will act, even though the Fed's options appear limited. Bernanke speaks to a central bank conference on Friday in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.
"I don't think anybody wants to be too short or negative in front of Bernanke's speech," said Jim Awad, managing director at Zephyr Management in New York.
The Dow Jones industrial average was up 322.11 points, or 2.97 percent, at 11,176.76. The Standard & Poor's 500 Index was up 38.53 points, or 3.43 percent, at 1,162.35. The Nasdaq Composite Index was up 100.68 points, or 4.29 percent, at 2,446.06.
Technology and other growth stocks drove much of the gains, with the Nasdaq rising more than 4 percent. The sharp rise echoed the wild swings the market experienced two weeks ago after Standard & Poor's downgraded United States' long-term credit.

The market has been battered by concerns of another U.S. recession and the worsening euro zone debt crisis.
"This is how the start of a rally in an oversold market usually looks like: an aggressive short-term gain like today," said Jack De Gan, chief investment officer at Harbor Advisory Corp in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, suggesting the market may have hit the bottom.
The rally briefly stalled in the afternoon on news of a magnitude of 5.9 earthquake, which struck in Virginia and forced some building evacuations along the U.S. East Coast and Canada, but no major damage or injuries were reported.
Big percentage gainers on the S&P included technology shares Nvidia Corp and JDS Uniphase Corp, both rising about 10 percent.
Among financial stocks, American Express Co and JPMorgan Chase & Co were the top gainers on the Dow. American Express shares rose 4.1 percent to $46.42, while JPMorgan shares advanced 4.1 percent to $34.78.
On the NYSE, advancers beat decliners by a ratio of about six to one, while on the Nasdaq, about five stocks rose for every one that fell.

South Dakota schools cut costs with 4-day week (AP)
IRENE, S.D. ? When the nearly 300 students of the Irene-Wakonda School District returned to school this week, they found a lot of old friends, teachers and familiar routines awaiting them. But one thing was missing: Friday classes.
This district in the rolling farmland of southeastern South Dakota is among the latest to adopt a four-day school week as the best option for reducing costs and dealing with state budget cuts to education.
"It got down to monetary reasons more than anything else," Superintendent Larry Johnke said. The $50,000 savings will preserve a vocational education program that otherwise would have been scrapped.
The four-school week is an increasingly visible example of the impact of state budget problems on rural education. This fall, fully one-fourth of South Dakota's districts will have moved to some form of the abbreviated schedule. Only Colorado and Wyoming have a larger proportion of schools using a shortened week. According to one study, more than 120 school districts in 20 states, most in the west, now use four-day weeks.
The schools insist that reducing class time is better than the alternatives and can be done without sacrificing academic performance. Yet not all parents are convinced.
"The kids are going to suffer," said Melissa Oien, who has four children in the school and serves as vice president of the parent-teacher organization. "Of course they will. They're missing a whole day of school."
The downsizing comes as schools in some larger cities are moving in the opposite direction. In Chicago, school officials hope to add school days so students will learn more and have better employment prospects.
Irene-Wakonda's predicament, like those of many other rural districts in the Great Plains, is compounded by declines in population and enrollment. The two towns, which are eight miles apart, combined their school districts in 2007 to save money. Wakonda got the elementary school and Irene the middle and high schools. Farming is the largest share of their economies, though some people commute to jobs in Yankton or Vermillion.
Johnke, the superintendent, said the district will add 30 minutes to each day and shorten the lunch break to provide more class time Monday through Thursday. In elementary school, recess and physical education classes will be shortened.
The changes won't entirely make up for losing Friday, Johnke said, but the district will still exceed the state's minimum standard for class time and will teach all the required material.
"We feel they'll get the same instruction. It'll have to be done a little bit differently," he said.
South Dakota's Republican-controlled Legislature slashed aid to schools this spring by 6.6 percent to help close a $127 million budget gap. Republican Gov. Dennis Daugaard said state revenue has not grown in three years while costs have risen for medical services for the poor.
He ruled out revenue increases. "I believe in shared sacrifice," Daugaard said earlier this year. Education groups hope to put a tax proposal on the 2012 ballot.
Facing budget shortfalls in the sour economy, many other state Legislatures also cut public education spending this year -- some, like Texas, sharply.
In South Dakota, the cut comes in a state that, according to recent census data, already ranked 44th in state spending per pupil. The Associated School Boards of South Dakota estimates another $233 million a year is needed to adequately fund schools.
Many districts reduced staff or eliminated programs to make up for the lost money. The number of districts going to four-day weeks has nearly doubled in just two years.
Wayne Lueders, the recently retired director of the Associated School Boards, said a four-day school week won't actually save much because schools still must pay salaries and benefits, "but every dollar counts in this current situation."
Schools can save on busing, food and other operations.
South Dakota's state education secretary, Melody Schopp, says schools that have switched to four days haven't suffered in achievement tests.
In Deuel, a 500-student district that shortened its week four years ago, Superintendent Dean Christensen said as much as $100,000 a year has been saved and the failure rate has declined, which he attributed to more time for tutoring and teacher training.
"It's not something to be scared of," Christensen said.
Woonsocket, a tiny eastern South Dakota district of just 185 students, plans to drop one Friday per month as an experiment, saving about $4,000 annually.
"I'd kind of like to put my feet in the water a little bit and see if this four-day week is as positive as everybody is talking about," Superintendent Rod Weber said.
James Hansen, former head of the state Education Department, is among those who worry that less schooling will put students at a disadvantage in a global economy.
"I think the students should be in school more than they are now," Hansen said. "The other countries are doing a far better job of making sure their students are prepared to meet the competition of the world."
While studies have confirmed the value of extending classroom time, no substantial research yet exists on academic achievement when it's shortened, said Michael Griffith, a senior policy analyst for the Education Commission of the States and author of a recent report on the four-day week.
In Irene-Wakonda, which had already dropped an arts teacher and several aides to cut costs, teachers and students said they'll make the best of the situation.
"I think it'll be fun for students because you'll get an extra day to do whatever you want," said Melissa Hessman, a 16-year-old junior. But, she added, "The longer the weekend, the more the brain's going to slow down, I think."
Farmer Don Logue said he accepts that there are few options.
"Nobody wants change, but where there is, usually you adapt to it," Logue said.

Those are simple pleasures in Oregon, but not for the children of Fukushima, Japan, where a nuclear disaster in the wake of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami forced them indoors for months, required them to wear protective gear when they did venture outside ? even made them wary of plants, grass and rain.
At least 11 kids and their parents, refugees from Fukushima and other parts of Japan, are visiting Oregon this month and living with U.S. host families as part of a grass-roots effort to give them a break from the stress and health risks they had been facing at home.
But as their brief respites draw to a close, their thoughts are already on the trip back home and what their next moves will be.
?I felt it was necessary to get away from that place where we had a really scary experience, and watch my son feel better and more alive,? Yoshie Arai, 37, who came to Oregon with 10-year-old Tatsuki in late July, said through a translator. ?That made me feel sure it was a good decision. But this trip has made me feel really strongly that maybe going back ? that?s not really the place to live. ? I want to seek other alternatives.?
More than 46,000 people living in Fukushima Prefecture have left since the triple disaster, the Mainichi Daily News reported this month, in English, citing local government data.
Among them were nearly 7,700 students, with another 1,100 planning to do so during the ongoing summer break, the newspaper quoted education officials as saying. Of the latter, 75 percent were leaving because of radiation concerns.
Worries about the impact of radiation on their children also were paramount for the mothers who brought their families to Oregon.
The government told them daily that there was radiation but not about how it could affect them ? just that it wouldn't right away, Mayumi Abe, who traveled to the U.S. with her 3-year-old daughter Karin, said through a translator.
They were told, ?Oh, if you worry about it, you can put a mask on and you can kind of wipe yourself off right before you go inside,? she added.
Another mom, Mayumi Fujimori, recounted the horror of learning her 8-year-old daughter, Remika, and other kids had been playing outside when the first reactor exploded at the plant, which eventually suffered meltdowns or partial meltdowns in three of its reactors. Later blasts released radioactive substances into the air and allowed contaminated water to leak into the ocean.
?Something really terrible, something really unimaginable happened,? Fujimori said through tears, noting she only found out about the blast hours after it happened. ?I didn?t know what to do and how I could protect my children. I tried to do my best.?
Children under the age of 18 are most sensitive to the effects of radioactive iodine, one of the main isotopes released during the disaster, according to the Centers of Disease Control.
Researchers on Saturday released a study showing that low levels of radioactive iodine had been found in the thyroid glands of children from Fukushima, Japanese broadcaster NHK reported.
The low levels found in about half the children suggest it is unlikely thyroid cancer rates would rise in the future, but testing should continue, said Satoshi Tashiro, a Hiroshima University professor who led the study of 1,149 children.
The local government will conduct two health screenings for Fukushima prefecture residents through October, Morikuni Makino of the Nuclear and Industrial Safety Agency wrote in an email to msnbc.com.
In addition to basic health checkups, health-care workers will estimate radiation exposure dose based on food consumption, conduct ultrasound tests on the thyroids of children and teenagers, and perform mental health evaluations. An individual health check specific to pregnant women would also will be conducted, Makino said.
In the last month, radiation levels have reached record highs at the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Station, said its owner, Tokyo Electric Power Company, and more than 1,000 cattle were found to have eaten feed contaminated with radioactive cesium, news agencies reported.
The announcements have stirred greater fears among the Fukushima mothers, some who said they don?t want to go back there.
Arai, whose son has suffered nightmares, nose bleeds and fevers that she attributes to stress, said she had planned to quit her job at a real estate firm before coming to Oregon, but they told her she should just take some time off.
But further reflection hasn?t changed her mind. Arai said she doesn?t think Fukushima is ?going to recover to the point that I?d like to see. I don?t think it?s a place for children to live.?
Chifumi Brown, a Japanese-American therapist who is hosting the Arai family, is holding a weekly informal therapy session for the mothers.
?They?re really in the survival mode of needing to get away,? she said.
They need ?a breath of fresh air, literally,? Brown?s husband, Chris, later added.
The families connected with each other through ?Boshi sokai-shien network hahako?, a network set up days after the disaster struck by Yuko Kida, a part-time English teacher living in southern Japan who wanted to help out families looking to escape Fukushima.
The name of the network means ?mother-child,? Kida explained, noting that pregnant women and babies are most vulnerable to radiation.
?We didn?t know how bad the impact of the nuclear plant?s accident (would be), but we could imagine maybe it will be very, very bad,? said Kida, a 45-year-old mother of two.
To date, about 45 families from countries such as the U.S., Australia, Britain, Thailand and Malaysia have offered to host families, with another 500 to 600 offers from elsewhere in Japan. A few hundred Japanese families have been placed with host homes so far.
The network also has now expanded ? it?s called ?Sokainowa? or ?ring of evacuation? ? to include support groups from throughout Japan.
Ten families were expected to travel to Oregon this year, said Camellia Nieh, a Japanese language interpreter and translator who organized the local effort.
Nieh said she was motivated to bring the families over to give them physical and emotional breaks, ?so that they can go back with ... renewed energy.?

The Japanese families ? they came without the fathers ? paid their airfares and made arrangements with the host families to cover their daily expenses, such as food.
?I wanted to do something directly, not just donating the money to some organization. I just really wanted to do person-to-person ? help,? said Kurumi Conley, a Japanese-American glass artist hosting the Fujimori family in her home with her husband and two daughters.
Abe, the mother of the 3-year-old, said the stay with their host family was critical to their mental health.
?I was trying to control all of that stress and emotion,? she said.
She felt guilty about taking Karin outdoors back home in Koriyama City and said that ?just be able to go outside is a huge thing,? noting her daughter had even asked her if plants were OK to touch in Oregon since back home she could not.
?I wanted my daughter to have a summer, to be able to go outside, and so I started looking abroad,? she said as she became teary-eyed.
She later added that her trip has been full of tears over the memories of ?just really simple things that I was able to do, that I used to be able to do.?
With their host family, they?ve visited a gorge, walked on Mount Hood where Karin made a tiny snowman and visited the taken in Portland?s Japanese Garden. The Arais have gone blueberry picking, and Tatsuki said his favorite activity was bike riding with his hosts.
When asked what he can do here that he can?t back home, Tatsuki said: ?I can open the window and I can also wear short sleeves and short pants.?
Fujimori?s daughter, Remika, drew a visitor a self-portrait showing what she had to wear to school after the disaster ? a mask, leg coverings and gloves, and a hat ? to protect against possible radiation contamination.
When asked about how it was to wear the gear and why she depicted herself under a red-colored sun, she said: ?It?s hot.?
Fujimori said she and her husband used money they were going to spend on fixing quake damage to their home for the U.S. trip, and she?s glad they did now that her daughters can ?play outside, walk around barefoot, drink good water, eat delicious vegetables and fruit.?
?My younger daughter gets to play outside for the first time,? too, she added, as her 15-month-old daughter played with flowers and practiced walking through their host family?s backyard.
Not all of the visiting families are from Fukushima. Wakana Koshio came with her two boys from the Katsushika-ku ward of Tokyo, which has been labeled a local radiation ?hotspot? by the grassroots monitoring network Safecast. She read books on radiation and scoured the Internet for information.
Koshio said she felt at one point like she ?failed to be a good mother,? believing she wasn?t able to protect her youngest son, a 2-year-old, from any risks.
?I felt like I failed to be a good mother. If you weren?t working then you could just fly away anywhere, but I couldn?t do that,? she said through tears. It was hard to get a month off from her job as a sales assistant, she said, ?but still I thought I should put my children first.?
Koshio and the Fukushima mothers expressed resentment at how the government handled the nuclear crisis and recounted trying to wrangle information out of authorities.
