Study suggests new benefits of eating nuts for patients with metabolic syndrome
ScienceDaily (Nov. 11, 2011) ? A recent scientific study has revealed the relationship between nut consumption and a high level of serotonin metabolites (an important neurotransmitter) in patients with metabolic syndrome, who are at high risk of cardiovascular disease.
The article, published in the Journal of Proteome Research,? is authored by Cristina Andr?s-Lacueva, Sara Tulipani (first author), Rafael Llorach and Mar Garcia-Aloy, from the University of Barcelona's Department of Nutrition and Bromatology, Olga Ja?regui, from the Scientific and Technical Services (CCiTUB), and the experts Jordi Salas Salvad?, Patricia L?pez-Uriarte and M?nica Bullo, from Rovira i Virgili University (URV) and the Spanish Biomedical Research Centre in Physiopathology of Obesity and Nutrition (CIBERobn), which is part of the Carlos III Health Institute in Madrid.
The study reports the first application of metabolomic techniques to analyse the effects of diet on metabolic syndrome patients. The disease, estimated by the World Health Organization to affect 20% of the adult population, is related to inflammation and oxidative stress and increases the risk of type-2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. In Catalonia, as in the United States, the prevalence of metabolic syndrome is close to 25% in adults. In Spain as a whole, in children with moderate obesity the prevalence is 17% (compared to 33% for the same population group in the UK).
The clinical part of the study, carried out by the URV's Human Nutrition research group, used two patient groups: one given a diet rich in nuts (specifically, walnuts, almonds and hazelnuts), the other given a diet containing no nuts at all.
As noted by Cristina Andr?s-Lacueva, head of the UB's Biomarkers and Nutritional and Food Metabolomics research group and coordinator of the experimental work for the study, "Metabolomics involves the quantitative, multiparametric measurement of human response to a pathophysiological stimulus. It enables us to take a new approach to biochemical and biomedical research, as it is not tied to restricted hypotheses. Metabolomics allows us to identify small alterations in metabolism and homeostasis and broadens the range of possible results thanks to the capacity to detect new markers that could indicate the risk of certain diseases and overall changes in the patient's state of health." Health benefits of a nut-rich diet The scientists behind the study analysed the wide spectrum of compounds excreted in urine and found evidence of various significant changes following nut consumption.
Patients given the nut-rich diet produced a higher level of metabolites derived from the metabolism of tryptophan and serotonin, fatty acids and polyphenols, giving more weight to the hypothesis that these molecules could be at the root of certain health benefits observed in other studies. "It we look at the results for the two patient groups," says researcher Sara Tulipani, "we find significant differences in the levels of these biomarkers. What we do not yet know is the percentage of the metabolite level detected in urine that is stimulated endogenously or exogenously by the patients' metabolism, and whether these metabolites have a direct or indirect role in the health benefits of nut consumption." Improve dietary habits to prevent disease In the field of food science, many studies focus on the importance of dietary changes in preventing metabolic alterations.
The new article provides the first results outlining the health benefits of nut consumption through the reduction of substances associated with inflammatory processes and other cardiovascular risk factors in patients with metabolic syndrome. This area of research could be extended in future work to include other nut varieties and a broader population sample (for example, subjects with diabetes, obesity, etc). "In food and dietary studies, the focus is always prevention. If we look specifically at this new research, we are not talking about a particular drug or introducing dietary supplements but simply replacing once source of fats with another, in this case nuts," explains Dr. Jordi Salas-Salvad?.
The UB's Biomarkers and Nutritional and Food Metabolomics research group, which contributes to the Fun-C-Food Consolider Project and is a member of the Food-Omics Network, works primarily with metabolomics, a key technique in the area of systems biology. The group, an active participant in international collaborations, focuses its research on the search for new robust, safe and sensitive biomarkers, based on analysis of their bioavailability and activity and the consumption of specific foodstuffs (consumption markers), and the simultaneous examination of different metabolic routes to determine their association with obesity, aging and reduced risk of cardiovascular disease (disease risk markers).

KABUL, Afghanistan (AP) ? A roadside bomb destroyed a car in eastern Afghanistan Saturday, killing nine civilians, including a woman and a child, officials said.
President Hamid Karzai condemned the bombing, which took place outside Mehterlam, the capital of Laghman province.
Faizanullah Patan, a spokesman for the provincial governor, put the death toll at nine and said the blast destroyed the vehicle.
NATO said one of its service members was killed by a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan. It provided no other information. The death raised to 496 the number of coalition troops killed in the country so far this year.
Also in the south, gunmen shot and killed a village elder in the Khash Rod district of Nimroz province, regional chief Hashim Norizia said.
Nimroz has been recommended for transition from NATO to Afghan security control later this year. The city of Mehterlam went to Afghan control in July.
A bicycle bomb in western Herat province's Injil district wounded two police officers and two civilians, the Interior Ministry said.
Many Afghan militants have traditionally had their strongholds in the south, but also carry out numerous attacks along the eastern border with Pakistan.

Europe health check shows TB, measles, other worries (Reuters)
LONDON (Reuters) ? Europe's health is suffering, with around 80,000 cases of tuberculosis infection a year and serious problems with measles, HIV and threats from "superbug" infections, an annual health report on the region said Thursday.
The European Center for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), which monitors disease in EU, said its 2011 report sends "worrying signals" on epidemics of measles, and shows that the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) that causes AIDS is still being passed on in all countries.
But the major public health concern for the EU is the threat of antibiotic resistance and the rise of "superbug," or multi drug-resistant, infections, the report said.
"The biggest threat we face is complacency about infectious diseases. The attitude that the battle against infectious diseases has been won must be continuously challenged," Marc Sprenger, director of the Stockholm-based ECDC, said in a forward to the report.
"This report provides plenty of evidence that microbes are still formidable enemies."
The ECDC's annual epidemiological report is designed to provide a picture of the state of infectious diseases in Europe so that European public health policymakers can decide on priorities and action to improve health.
The 2011 report is based on data from 2009 and 2010 -- since collecting and analyzing disease numbers takes time -- but officials said the picture it paints is one that has changed little. If anything, things appear to have got worse.
The "worrying signals" on measles in Europe noted in 2009 have now translated into a epidemics of the disease in many countries in Europe this year, with more than 30,000 cases reported across the region so far in 2011.
And the World Health Organization said in September this year that strains of multi drug-resistant and extensively drug-resistant TB are spreading at an "alarming" rate in Europe and will kill thousands unless health authorities act quickly.
Part of the reason for the tuberculosis epidemics is the rise of antibiotic resistance -- a factor the ECDC said was vital to get under control, even if economic hard times make it hard to find the money to invest.
The ECDC warned late last year that a multi-drug resistant "superbug" from India first reported in Britain in August 2010 was rapidly spreading across the region.
"In order to fight against infectious diseases, continuous investment in and improvement of surveillance systems ... is of outmost importance despite times of economic recession across Europe," Sprenger said in the 2011 report.
A study in The Lancet last month showed how the economic crisis in Greece is already hitting the health of that nation hard, with rates of suicide, HIV infection and illegal drug use all rising.
Experts warned that other European nations struggling with mounting debts and faltering growth should take note of how recessions can harm health.
Thursday's ECDC report also identified several emergent diseases in Europe it said might pose a risk to public health.
There are indications that the West Nile virus might have established itself in parts of south-east Europe, it said, and there have even been locally acquired cases of diseases previously only considered to be imported, like malaria, dengue fever and chikungunya.

WASHNGTON (AP) ? Mitt Romney chugged ahead Thursday as the conservative-fueled drive to deny him the Republican presidential nomination reached a difficult new phase: Once-surging rivals Rick Perry and Herman Cain scrambled to control serious damage, while an old face sought new ways to exploit their problems.
Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich could emerge as the newest hope for conservative activists who doubt Romney's commitment to their priorities. But Gingrich trails Romney and others in organizing in key states such as Iowa. And he will have to prove that his long and sometimes troubled political history can withstand closer scrutiny.
Meanwhile, Texas Gov. Perry rearranged his schedule Thursday to try to mitigate a disastrous debate moment, in which he could not remember the third federal agency he has vowed to abolish. Perry canceled a Tennessee fundraiser to appear on several TV networks and the David Letterman show, pledging to stay in the race.
He repeatedly said he "stepped in it" at the Wednesday night debate but declared in an interview, "This ain't a day for quitting nothing."
For Cain, the former pizza company executive, it was day 11 of trying to get beyond sexual harassment accusations leveled against him by four women, two of whom received cash settlements from a trade association Cain once headed.
Facing voters for the first time since the allegations emerged, Cain met with tea party groups in Michigan, hoping the friendly settings would preserve the lofty perch he enjoyed in GOP polls two weeks ago.
"How you beat Obama? Beat him with a Cain!" he told one supporter at a crowded diner in Ypsilanti. The crowd cheered.
He is airing his first TV ad in Iowa, and he has hired a new lawyer who is warning women they will be scrutinized for any charges made against the candidate.
Late Thursday word came that attempts to organize a joint news conference with the four women alleging Cain harassed them had fallen apart. Joel Bennett, the attorney for Karen Kraushaar, said his client had decided not to hold the news conference "unless and until the other women come forward and wish to participate."
Romney, the former Massachusetts governor who recently filmed a TV ad in Iowa, blasted President Barack Obama's Iran policy in a Wall Street Journal opinion piece Thursday. His supporters quietly reveled in the good fortune of Perry's and Cain's woes.
With the Iowa caucus set for Jan. 3, and the New Hampshire primary a week after that, Romney is looking strong, but he's hardly home free. Many conservatives still resent his past support of legalized abortion and gay rights, and his requirement that all Massachusetts residents obtain health insurance.
But they have failed to coalesce around a single alternative. Rep. Michele Bachmann briefly topped the polls, followed by Perry and then Cain. It's unclear whether Cain can hold his position.
Some Iowa Republicans hope former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum, who emphasizes social conservative issues such as abortion and gay rights, can make a move. He has visited all 99 Iowa counties and aired radio commercials.
Other party insiders feel the person best poised to rise is Gingrich, the fiery Georgian who led the GOP's 1994 takeover of the House (after 40 years in the minority). He eventually lost his leadership post and left the House after clashing with President Bill Clinton over taxes and an unpopular government showdown.
Gingrich is adding staff in key states, opening new offices this week and raising more money than he has in months.
With Romney widely seen as the front-runner in New Hampshire, a rival must do well in Iowa to surpass him. Gingrich is popular with many Iowa Republicans, and he drew good reviews for his speech at a large dinner in Des Moines last week.
But he has little structure in place for the organizationally intensive caucuses, which require people to show up for gatherings on a mid-winter night. Gingrich has not done much of the retail-level campaigning seen by past successful caucus candidates. His schedule in the next 10 days shows him visiting the state to promote a movie he produced with his wife and participate in a multi-candidate event aimed at social conservative activists
Gingrich has had no paid staff in Iowa since a mass exodus of his campaign team in June. He plans to name a staff and open campaign headquarters in Iowa soon,
"What I'm seeing now is a real surge of energy" for Gingrich, said supporter Linda Upmeyer, Iowa's House majority leader. "The bright, shiny things have come and gone, and now people are focusing on a decision."
A key question is whether Romney will see Cain's and Perry's problems as a chance to make a big push in Iowa. A win there would make him the prohibitive favorite. But to fare poorly after raising expectations would echo his disappointing Iowa performance four years ago.
Romney has made only four public visits to Iowa this year. But a small core of advisers and staff keeps in close touch with key elements of the Iowa network he assembled in 2007.
Romney has phoned activists and held multiple question-and-answer conference calls that included thousands of potential voters. He has been the most consistent poll leader in Iowa without pulling away. The Des Moines Register's late-October survey showed Romney with 22 percent, narrowly trailing Cain.
Romney has a healthy contingent of precinct-level caucus leaders, an edge over many of his rivals. He has sponsored phone calls criticizing Perry's position on immigration.
However, Romney has avoided multicandidate forums in Iowa. He is not expected to participate in an event sponsored by a social conservative group in Des Moines on Nov. 19, or the evening fundraiser for Iowa Gov. Terry Branstad the same evening. Several other candidates are expected at both events.
Bachmann had a bumpy day Thursday. About 30 Occupy Wall Street protesters loudly interrupted her foreign policy speech in Mount Pleasant, S.C., saying she was dividing the nation. Bachmann left the stage but returned and finished her speech after the protesters departed.
