Japan launches talking humanoid robot into space

TOKYO (AP) ? Japan has launched the world's first talking humanoid robot "astronaut" toward the International Space Station.

Kirobo ? derived from the Japanese words for "hope" and "robot" ? was among five tons of supplies and machinery on a rocket launched Sunday from Tanegashima in southwestern Japan, the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, or JAXA, said.

The childlike robot was designed to be a companion for astronaut Koichi Wakata and will communicate with another robot on Earth, according to developers. Wakata is expected to arrive at the space station in November.

Robot designer Tomotaka Takahashi, of the University of Tokyo, advertiser Dentsu and automaker Toyota Motor Corp. worked on the robot.

The challenge was making sure it could move and talk where there was no gravity.

Ahead of the launch, the 34-centimeter (13-inch) tall Kirobo told reporters, "one small step for me, a giant leap for robots."

Japan boasts the most sophisticated robotics in the world, but because of its "manga" culture, it tends to favor cute robots with human-like characteristics with emotional appeal, a use of technology that has at times drawn criticism for being not productive.

But Takahashi said sending a robot into space could help write a new chapter in the history of communication.

"I wish for this robot to function as a mediator between person and machine, or person and Internet and sometimes even between people," he said.

JAXA said the rocket launch was successful, and the separation of a cargo vehicle, carrying the robot to the space station, was confirmed about 15 minutes after liftoff.

US band attacked following Russian flag stunt

Jared Hasselhoff of Bloodhound Gang pushing the Russian flag into his pants.

Americans aren't the only ones sensitive about how their national flag is handled ? it turns out the Russians also like to make sure their country's flag is treated well. That's what U.S.-based band Bloodhound Gang discovered on their recent tour.

While visiting the Ukranian town of Odessa last Wednesday, bassist Jared Hasselhoff (real name: Jared Victor Hennegan) put a Russian flag down his pants, telling the cheering crowd "Don't tell (Russian President Vladimir) Putin," and pulled it out the rear. The video went on YouTube and quickly went viral overseas.

Not everyone in the band liked what they saw; the video also shows frontman Jimmy Pop telling the crowd he disagreed with what Hasselhoff had just done: "Russia is better than America," he said, "so I disapprove of that."

Doing that in the Ukraine is one thing. But where Bloodhound Gang made their next mistake was in continuing the tour ... in Russia. Russian officials got involved after viewing the video, and the band's participation at the Kubana Music Festival in the southern Russian area of Krasnodar Krai over the weekend was canceled, according to The New York Times.?

According to Rolling Stone, culture minister Vladimir Medinsky tweeted on Friday: "Bloodhound Gang packing suitcases. These idiots won't perform in Kubana."

But it wasn't just Russian officials getting heated about the display. The Times also wrote that locals threw eggs and tomatoes at the band as it headed out of Anapa, a town near the venue where their show was canceled. Later, as the band were being deported, Russian nationalists tracked the band down at an airport lounge and assaulted the musicians, trying to smother one band member with an American flag.

Police intervened, and the band reportedly left the country on Sunday.?

Hasselhoff has publicly apologized, adding that the passing of items of all kinds through his pants is a band tradition, but Russia's top law enforcement agency is still considering pressing charges.

Top Colorado GOP donors urge congressmen to support immigration reform

WASHINGTON ? A who's who of top Republican donors in Colorado sent a letter Tuesday beseeching Colorado's GOP delegation to embrace comprehensive immigration reform and provide a path to legal status for the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States.

The seven donors have collectively contributed hundreds of thousands of dollars to both the Republican party and to Colorado's four House Republicans' re-election efforts in the past two years.

"Doing nothing is de facto amnesty," the letter said. "We need to take control of whom we let in our country and we need to make sure everybody plays by the same rules."

Among those who signed the letter were NexGen Resources CEO Charlie McNeil, who between 2011 and 2013 contributed $107,000 to various candidates and the party, M.D.C. Holdings CEO Larry Mizel, who contributed $212,000 between 2011 and 2013, and Marilyn Ware, former ambassador to Finland and former chair of American Water Works, who donated $167,000 between 2011 and 2013 to Republican candidates and the party.

"It's something I've believed in for a very long time. We definitely are motivated to get the message to the congressional delegation," said Laramie Energy II CEO Bruce Payne, who has donated $26,000 from 2011 to 2013 to Republicans and the party. "I just believe these are the exact kind of citizens we want here. They came here at extreme risk to themselves to improve their lives, and that's the American dream."

The letter says "doing nothing" is "not the path for the Republican party."

"Immigrants are often entrepreneurial, family-minded and guided by faith. These are Republican values," the letter says. "These are Colorado values."

The donor letter does not mention the Senate immigration bill that passed with a bipartisan majority in June and gives a 13-year path to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented immigrants living in the United States.

That measure faces no real future in the GOP-controlled House, and leaders say they may take a piecemeal approach to solving the problem.

Colorado's four Republicans have varying ? and even changing ? beliefs on immigration reform.

Rep. Mike Coffman, R-Aurora, told a group of immigrant rights advocates gathered at a Catholic church Sunday he supported an earned pathway to citizenship for the 11 million undocumented people.

Rep. Cory Gardner, R-Yuma, said he supports proposals that strengthen border security and enforcement first. He said he supports a strong guest worker program in areas such as agriculture and construction.

"After that ? and only after that ? can we begin to look at next steps for those who are here without documentation," Gardner said.

Rep. Scott Tipton, R-Cortez, was mum Tuesday about whether he believes in a pathway to legal status for anyone.

"The House is currently in the process of putting forward an immigration reform plan of its own, and as we progress, I believe both parties need to work together with the goal of achieving a solution," he said.

Rep. Doug Lamborn, R-Colorado Springs, did not respond to the letter Tuesday.

Ohio killer set for execution found hanged in cell

(AP) ? A man condemned to death for fatally stabbing a neighbor during a Cleveland burglary was found hanged in his cell Sunday just days before his Wednesday execution.

Billy Slagle, 44, was found at about 5 a.m. at the Chillicothe Correctional Institution south of Columbus and was declared dead within the hour, prison spokeswoman JoEllen Smith said.

"He was in his cell alone. No other inmates suspected to be involved," Smith said in an email. "It does appear to be a suicide."

Under regular prison policy, he was scheduled to be placed under pre-execution watch Sunday morning but "was not yet placed under constant watch," Smith said.

Slagle's defense team was shocked and saddened at the news and had no clue he might commit suicide, attorney Vicki Werneke said.

"We were still litigating in court and had hoped that the execution would have been stopped. There was oral argument scheduled for Monday afternoon," she told The Associated Press in an email.

An autopsy will be conducted Monday, according to Mike Ratliff, chief investigator for the Ross County coroner. He said the case was under investigation and no initial findings could be provided.

Slagle was sentenced in 1988 to die for the stabbing of Mari Anne Pope, who was killed while two young children she was watching were in the house.

In a rare move, the prosecutor in Cleveland asked the Ohio Parole Board to spare Slagle. Cuyahoga County Prosecutor Tim McGinty said jurors today, with the option of life without parole, would be unlikely to sentence Slagle to death.

The parole board and Gov. John Kasich both rejected mercy for Slagle.

McGinty declined comment through a spokesman.

Last week, Slagle's attorney argued that a jury never got the chance to hear the full details of his troubled childhood.

The attorneys, arguing for a new trial and to delay his execution, said that information met requirements for asking for a new trial, which normally must happen within four months of a conviction.

Slagle was "unavoidably prevented" from filing his request because his original attorneys didn't develop and present the evidence, the filing said.

McGinty and Slagle's attorneys had cited his age ? at 18, he was barely old enough for execution in Ohio ? and his history of alcohol and drug addiction.

Microsoft Announces Xbox One GPU Upgrade

xbox one e3 copy Microsoft Announces Xbox One GPU Upgrade

Xbox executive Marc Whitten announced on Major Nelson?s podcast yesterday that the upcoming Xbox One has received upgrades to its graphic specifications. According to Whitten, a brand new Xbox One-specific driver called the ?mono driver? has been implemented, and the clock speed of the GPU has been raised from 800 MHz to 853 MHz.

Whitten explained the philosophy and timing behind this update, as follows:

?This is the time where we?ve gone from theory of how the hardware works?what do we think the yield is going to look like, what is the thermal envelope, how do things come together?to really having them in our hands. That?s the time where you start tweaking the knobs because either your theory was right dead-on or you were a little too conservative or you were a little too aggressive.?

These upgrades are being implemented before the console?s release this November, so it?s tough to say how ? or even if ? these changes will make much of a difference. Most people have yet to get their hands on the new Xbox, let alone spend enough time with it to be able to mark a noticeable difference.

What?s clear, however, is that this is yet another piece of news in a series of announcements from Microsoft that are aimed squarely at doing away with any concerns from the public over the Xbox One?s perceived inferiority to Sony?s PlayStation 4.?After Digital Foundry?s recent report that the PS4 could have ?20% better performance? than the new Xbox, the timing of this performance upgrade reveal couldn?t be more appropriate.

At this point, Xbox is playing catch-up with the PlayStation and Microsoft is desperately trying to narrow the gap they created at their E3 conference. Now with the policies and specifications of the Xbox One more closely resembling those of the PS4, it?ll be interesting to see if they can take the pre-launch lead in the next console race, or if its too little, too late. Either way, it?s sure to be a close one.

Map shows U.S. embassies and consulates that will close; 3c x 3 inches; 146 mm x 76 mm;

(AP) ? Top U.S. officials met Saturday to review the threat of a terrorist attack that led to the weekend closure of 21 U.S. embassies and consulates in the Muslim world and a global travel warning to Americans. President Barack Obama was briefed following the session, the White House said.

Obama's national security adviser, Susan Rice, led the meeting and then joined Lisa Monaco, Obama's assistant for homeland security and counterterrorism, in briefing the president, the White House said in a statement.

"The president has received frequent briefings over the last week on all aspects of the potential threat and our preparedness measures," according to the statement.

Among those at the meeting Saturday afternoon were the secretaries of state, defense and homeland security and the directors of the FBI, CIA and the National Security Agency, according to the White House. Also attending was Gen. Martin Dempsey, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

In an interview Friday with ABC News, Dempsey said officials had determined there was "a significant threat stream" and that the threat was more specific than previous ones. The "intent is to attack Western, not just U.S. interests," he said.

The global travel warning was the first such alert since an announcement before the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The warning comes less than a year since the deadly September attack on a U.S. diplomatic post in Benghazi, Libya, and with the Obama administration and Congress determined to prevent any similar breach of an American embassy or consulate.

The State Department's warning urged U.S. travelers to take extra precautions overseas. It cited potential dangers involved with public transportation systems and other prime sites for tourists, and noted that previous attacks have centered on subway and rail networks as well as airplanes and boats.

Travelers were advised to sign up for State Department alerts and register with U.S. consulates in the countries they visit.

The statement said that al-Qaida or its allies might target either U.S. government or private American interests. The alert expires on Aug. 31.

The State Department said the potential for terrorism was particularly acute in the Middle East and North Africa, with a possible attack occurring on or coming from the Arabian Peninsula. The diplomatic facilities affected stretch from Mauritania in northwest Africa to Afghanistan.

U.S. officials pointed specifically to Yemen, the home of al-Qaida's most dangerous affiliate and the network blamed for several notable plots against the United States, from the foiled Christmas Day 2009 effort to bomb an airliner over Detroit to the explosives-laden parcels intercepted the following year aboard cargo flights.

"Current information suggests that al-Qaida and affiliated organizations continue to plan terrorist attacks both in the region and beyond, and that they may focus efforts to conduct attacks in the period between now and the end of August," a department statement said.

Yemen's president, Abdo Rabby Mansour Hadi, met with U.S. President Barack Obama at the White House on Thursday, where both leaders cited strong counterterrorism cooperation. This past week, Yemen's military reported a U.S. drone strike killed six alleged al-Qaida militants in the group's southern strongholds.

Rep. Ed Royce, R-Calif., the House Foreign Affairs Committee chairman, said the embassy threat was linked to al-Qaida and concerned the Middle East and Central Asia.

"In this instance, we can take a step to better protect our personnel and, out of an abundance of caution, we should," Royce said. He declined to say if the National Security Agency's much-debated surveillance program helped reveal the threat.

Congress clears bill to ease military screening

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Congress is sending President Barack Obama a bill that would make it easier for wounded or disabled members of the military and veterans to get through airport security screening.

The House approved the measure by voice vote Friday, a day after the Senate. It would require the Defense Department and Veterans Affairs to work with the Transportation Security Administration on a new protocol.

Democratic congresswoman Tulsi Gabbard of Hawaii, a veteran of the Iraq war, sponsored the bill. Proponents in the Senate were Democratic Sen. Mark Pryor of Arkansas and Republican Sen. Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire.

Gabbard says that she pushed for the bill after hearing stories from service members who had to remove clothes or prosthetics in front of other passengers, and then struggled through screening machines.

Russian mobile malware makers numerous and highly organized, says security firm

malware

Lookout 1

Lookout

The organizations make setting up a malware-serving website like signing up for an email or online game.

Mobile security software company Lookout was hot on the trail of a set of Russian malware distributors ? and was surprised to find that the biggest groups responsible were as neatly and effectively organized as a small tech business.

Don't get paranoid just yet: Lookout explained to NBC News in an email that this type of fraud isn't nearly as common here: "It appears that they've cut back on targeting [Western] countries because they're having more success in Russia and the Eastern block. In the past we've even seen SMS fraud targeting the U.S. and western Europe," they wrote.

The way it works is this: an unscrupulous or merely curious Android user searches for free games or apps on his or her phone, and follows a resulting link to a legitimate-looking landing page. After agreeing (often without knowing it) to a terms of service, they are served up a malware application that scams money by fraudulently sending premium SMS messages ? special texts used to purchase ringtones or sign up for a service.

Thousands of Twitter accounts and fake websites are set up to lure unwitting users, but when Lookout followed the thread a bit further, they found that many led back to a few surprisingly professional-looking organizations.

Lookout 2

Lookout

An example of a "landing page" users would be sent to (and redirected from).

From their official websites, productivity contests, and easy-to -use tools, at first glance one might guess these malware operators were legitimate software developers or advertisers. And in effect, that's exactly what these malware HQs are: small startups raking in cash thanks to the booming mobile sector. It just happens that the business they make their money through is fraud.

Affiliates sign up for the site as if they were joining a forum or freelance contractor website. A user-friendly, step-by-step process helps them create fake webpages, design and submit malware-toting apps, and makes the latest virus-scan-avoidance software available.

Meanwhile, the malware makers register dozens or hundreds of fake accounts on Twitter and other networks ? out of almost a quarter-million accounts analyzed by Lookout, over 50,000 were puppet accounts linking to malware.

Just 10 of these malware HQ organizations account for 60 percent of the SMS fraud Lookout tracked in Russia. Such scams don't usually affect the U.S. or western Europe, but it's not unheard of.

Twitter shuts down such accounts when it finds them, and malicious apps are removed from Google's Play Store whenever detected, but are these big organizations being raided or shut down now that they've been outed??

"We generally don't comment on ongoing investigations like this one," wrote Lookout. "However, in past investigations that are now closed, we have contacted authorities."

Even so, it's little comfort when the groups out there are so well-organized and well-staffed. Your best bet is to stick to well-known websites and only download apps from stores you trust. The problem may not be going away just yet, but consumers can avoid it ? with a little discretion.

Facebook?to explain its News Feed at Aug. 6 event

Social media

Facebook

Duane Hoffman / NBC News

The Facebook News Feed is a source of frustration and confusion for many. Why does it show the things it shows? Why doesn't it show every photo posted by that one girl you like? How do you control it? The social network will finally break things down on Aug. 6.

According to the press invitation for 10 a.m. PT / 1 p.m. ET on Tuesday at Facebook's headquarters in Menlo Park, Calif., Facebook will be "taking a deeper look at the ranking algorithms that determine which stories appear at the top of your feed" and discussing "a specific update to organic ranking that?s coming up."

We also expect to hear plenty of reminders about the signals we can give Facebook to help it better rank content in the News Feed. For example, liking an item, commenting, sharing, or otherwise interacting with a post can indicate that we want to see more items like that. On the flipside, hiding the post from our News Feed using the dropdown menu, signals that we don't want to see similar items as much.

How Facebook intends to improve or change the News Feed ranking remains a mystery though ? until Aug. 6, at least.

Want more tech news or interesting links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook posts, or circling her on?Google+.

(AP) ? Bird poop for beauty?

That's what goes into facials at a luxury spa where the traditional Japanese treatment using imported Asian nightingale excrement mixed with rice bran goes for $180 a pop.

About 100 women and men go into the Shizuka New York skin care salon, just off Manhattan's Fifth Avenue, each month to get the treatment, which is promoted as a way to keep the face soft and smooth using an enzyme in the poop to gently exfoliate the skin.

Spa owner Shizuka Bernstein, a Tokyo native married to an American, has been offering what she calls the Geisha Facial for about five years.

"I try to bring Japanese beauty secrets to the United States," says Bernstein, who learned the treatment from her mother.

The Geisha Facial poop treatment, while relatively rare in the United States, is no secret in Japan, where it was first used in the 1600s by actors and geishas.

"That's why Japanese grandmothers have beautiful complexions," says Duke Klauck, owner of the Ten Thousand Waves health spa in Santa Fe, N.M., which offers a Nightingale Facial for $129.

On a recent afternoon in Manhattan, Mari Miyoshi arrived at the sixth-floor Shizuka New York spa to try the treatment for the first time.

"I'm a stressed-out New Yorker," the 35-year-old occupational therapist announced as she reclined on a table, relaxing amid aromas of camellia, lavender and rose.

The treatment begins with steam to open the pores and soften the skin. Cream is applied. And then comes what Bernstein calls "the nightingale part."

She pours the cream-colored poop, dried and finely ground, into a bowl, mixing it with the rice bran using a small spatula. She applies the potion to Miyoshi's face with a brush, rubbing it in with her hands.

Does it smell?

"Yes, but like toasted rice," Miyoshi says.

After about five minutes, it comes off with a foaming cleanser and Miyoshi's face is draped in a warm, wet towel bathed in lavender and geranium essences. Finally, the grand finale ? a green-tea collagen mask.

"Sooooo nice," Bernstein says softly, looking at Miyoshi's radiant face.

Dr. Michele Green, a Manhattan cosmetic dermatologist, says that while the nightingale facial "definitely has some rejuvenating effect, I don't think it's any different than, say, an apricot scrub or a mask that you could buy in a local pharmacy."

A common misconception is that any old bird poop, even from pigeons, is used. Bernstein says only droppings from birds of the nightingale species are used because they live on seeds, producing the natural enzyme that is the active ingredient.

"We don't do Central Park facials," she says, "because those birds eat garbage."

Granted some of these cases do get out of hand and drag on for too long, but given that some companies spend years developing their technology only to have it ?stolen?, we can see why they are so determined to fight till the end to make sure they are compensated for it.

However on the other side of the coin, there are some who believe that patents could actually hold back innovation, and recently two Nobel Prize-winning economists have stepped forward and claimed that software patents are actually inhibiting innovation.

One of the economists, Gary Becker, acknowledges that while patents help provide developers the peace of mind knowing that what they develop will be ?protected? legally, he also believes that in the grander scheme of things, the abolishing of patents will help free up more developers who might otherwise be afraid that they could end up in court and pay huge legal fees in damages.

Economist Eric Maskin has expressed that he believes that patents are harmful, and that a company or an individual with a particular patent, can actually block or slow down the progress by putting up high licensing fees. Of course one could make an argument for either side, but these are some pretty valid points, with President Obama even going as far as to launch executive actions to combat patent trolls. What do you guys think?

Microsoft offers free WiFi for Skype Premium users during August

If you are a paid member of Microsoft's Skype Premium service, the month of August will give you something extra to look forward to, especially if you are a frequent traveler with your smartphone, tablet or laptop.

Microsoft announced today that from now until August 30th,?Skype Premium subscribers will be able to access any of the one million Skype WiFi supported hotpots for free. This is especially good for travelers who have laptops but sometimes have to pay extra to access a WiFi connection in a hotel room or in an airport terminal.

The price for Skype Premium service is $9.99 per month, or $4.99 a month if you pay up front for 12 months. US users can then use Skype for unlimited calls on mobile and landlines numbers to the US and Canada, with other options available for many other countries. Skype WiFi is supported by Windows 8's Modern UI, along with the regular Windows desktop, Mac OS, Linux, Android and iOS platforms.

A few weeks ago, Microsoft launched a Skype WiFi app for Windows 8?which lets users detect if a WiFi hotspot is supported by Skype and then letting them pay for their online connection time via Skype Credit.

Did Israel Just Bomb Syria or is this Another ?Innocence of the Muslims? Psyop Unfolding? Or Both?

by Scott Creighton

It?s being reported as everything from a ?fireworks display malfunction? to a victory for the ?freedom fighters in Syria? but at this point, I don?t really know what to make of it.

Apparently there has been a massive explosion near Homs in Syria preceded by several other explosions and a fire.

?At least 22 people, including civilians, were killed and dozens wounded, some seriously, when an ammunitions depot blew up in the pro-regime Wadi al-Zahab district after rocket fire, most probably by rebels,? the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.?? AFP

There is a home video of the smoke and the explosion at the end of this article.

It?s important to note that SANA is saying the casualty reports are inflated to give the terrorists a morale boost after loosing so much ground recently to the government. But they do admit 4 civilians were killed.

Early reports were that it was mortar fire from the terrorists.

The? size of the explosion cannot be explained by RPGs or the random rocket a CIA terrorist would have on them. It was massive (again, video below).

It would be like the Israelis to take advantage of a distraction like the Snowden story to launch an attack on another country. They do it quite often, the best example being back in 2008 when they attacked Gaza on our election day here in the states.

And when Israel strikes someone pre-emptively, turns out they don?t usually admit it later unless they are forced to:

? Israel has a longstanding policy of not acknowledging pre-emptive military strikes.? New York Times

Ironically (or maybe not), it was just reported today that we should expect Israel to strike Syria ?very soon? in an effort to get some missiles they claim to have missed in their last illegal and immoral attack on another sovereign nation.

Unnamed US officials leaked information Thursday on alleged Israeli air strikes in Syria, and told The New York Times they expect an additional attack by Israel in the near future.

The sources, described by the Times as ?American intelligence analysts,? discussed what they said were classified assessments, according to which a July 5 IAF strike on a Syrian facility housing Russian surface-to-sea missiles in Latakia failed to destroy them all.? Jerusalem Post

Assad recently pissed off the American establishment by claiming they were going to win in this illegal destabilization campaign being run by Washington and London and Tel Aviv.

Russia also put themselves on the sh*t list this week when they said it was immoral for Washington to be hiring terrorists to destabilize Syria. They got the Snowden story for their efforts. Looks like someone hit Syria for Assad?s.

Also of note, it would appear that al Qaeda is threatening an embassy or some other location in the Middle East for a good old fashioned terrorist attack this weekend. They are shutting down U.S. embassies all across the Middle East, I guess they don?t want another Benghazi investigation taking place.

?CBS News correspondent David Martin reports that U.S. intelligence has picked up signs of an al Qaeda plot against American diplomatic posts in the Middle East and other Muslim countries. The intelligence does not mention a specific location, which is why all embassies that would normally be open on Sunday have been ordered to close. That includes embassies and consulates in the Middle East, North Africa, and South Asia, where Sunday is the start of the work week.

Martin further reported that officials say this appears to be a real plot in the making and not just the normal chatter among terrorists talking about attacks they?d like to carry out. But these same officials add they are missing key pieces of information.? CBS news

The story will be that no one can blame the administration this time because he shut down all the embassies in the region. Odd though, isn?t it, that al Qaeda is fighting alongside our assets in Syria (and being openly backed by Sec. Kerry) and getting weapons funneled to them from people like Chris Stevens in Libya, and suddenly they want to attack an embassy somewhere in the Middle East.

Did they just remember they hate us for our freedom or is this something else?

What do you think?.

Apple To Source IPad Screens From Samsung: WSJ

Apple Inc. will use high-resolution screens from its rival Samsung Electronics Co. for a new iPad mini device planned for the fourth quarter, The Wall Street Journal reported early Thursday, citing unnamed sources. The report quoted a component supplier as saying the U.S. tech major had originally planned to use only screens from Japan's Sharp Corp. and South Korea's LG Display Co. , but decided to also procure the parts from Samsung to ensure supply. Apple and Samsung have fought a series of bitter patent disputes in courts across the world and are fierce competitors in the lucrative smartphone market. But Apple has frequently used Samsung parts in its past products. The report said the size of the new iPad mini tablet would likely be the same as the current 7.9-inch model, released last November.

GIMME SHELTER: Summer is busy season for the Niagara Falls ...

Cathy Fugler

GIMME SHELTER/Cathy Fugler

Oh, a storm is threat?ning
My very life today
If I don?t get some shelter
Oh yeah, I?m gonna fade away

Saturday was a great day: We participated in Niagara Dogfest, which is a big annual event celebrating all things canine.

Baby bunnies have a temporary home at the Niagara Falls Humane Society. (Photo NFHS)

The Niagara Falls Humane Society was invited to host a barbecue lunch for the day, as we did last year, and we also included our signature Sour Puss Lemonade stand, and an Art for Animals tent. Thanks to everyone who supported our efforts and helped us pull off another successful fundraiser.

Every day is a busy day at our little shelter, and yesterday was no exception. In addition to her usual duties, our vet tech, Jen, was caring for a baby robin, feeding a tiny hummingbird, and attending to two baby bunnies. The variety of things she is responsible for sure makes her days interesting. There is a tremendous amount of caring in our building every single day, and it makes me proud to work here.

Summer is such a busy time at the shelter. Please be patient if you call and get put on hold, or if you have to wait in our lobby. If you have an animal to surrender, call us first to set up an appointment. And be aware that we have a waiting list for cat surrenders because the shelter is full right now.

Unbelievably, people are still leaving their dogs in cars in our community. I implore you to leave your pets at home where they are safe and cool on these hot summer days. It?s incredible to me that every single day we get calls about dogs suffering in locked cars in the summer heat. Your dog?s health and wellbeing is completely your responsibility. Keep them safe. Leave them at home. And if you see a dog in a hot car, please call us, or the police immediately, don?t take matters into your own hands.

Please visit our website, www.nfhs.ca? to view all the animal profiles, and to check out what?s happening at the shelter. Our Facebook page is another great way for you to stay in the loop.

***

Please visit our website, www.nfhs.ca and like us on Facebook. We have so many wonderful animals looking for their forever families right now, check them out on our Facebook albums HERE.

If you think you might have a talent or skill that would help the shelter, please call or email me. Are you good at fixing things? Gardening? Desktop publishing? Are you crafty? We could use your help. Call me so I can fill you in. The number at the shelter is 905-356-4404, or visit our website at www.nfhs.ca.

Robin Thicke's 'Blurred Lines' On Track To Debut At Number One ...

Robin Thicke?s Blurred Lines is projected to debut at number one on the Billboard album chart next week with an estimated tally of 130,000 copies. That number has been construed as disappointing by some given the omnipresence of ?Blurred Lines? on the radio and its seven-week stint on top of the Hot 100. But it?s still enough to snag the blue-eyed soul singer his first chart-topping album and, potentially, his biggest first-week sales bow.

At present that honor belongs to Something Else, which debuted at number three with 135,000+ copies sold in 2008. Given the sex symbol?s non-stop promo campaign and appeal to older audiences (who mostly go shopping later in the week because they are, you know, working), he should be able to top that. And if the ?Sex Therapy? singer doesn?t, he can always console himself by looking in the mirror.

What do you make of Robin?s projected sales? Let us know in the comments below.

Inside Real-Life Love Affair Inspired by 'Sleepless in Seattle' Home ...

"What if someone you never met, someone you never saw, someone you never knew was the only someone for you?" That's the idea behind -- and tagline to -- 1993's romantic comedy "Sleepless in Seattle," which found huge financial and cultural success in improbably uniting characters portrayed by Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, who at the film's start live on opposite coasts.

Who knows how many real-life romances "Sleepless in Seattle" inspired? But according to a report from KING-TV in Seattle, it provided a real-life happy ending for property values in the neighborhood where Hanks' character resides. And the houseboat used as its location "still attracts tourists looking to see where Tom Hanks' character lived."

The movie also inspired a real-life bi-coastal love affair -- between a man, a woman and a piece of real estate -- that ended with a New Jersey couple buying and renovating the floating home. The KING video above describes their story and offers a rare, up-close glimpse inside the unassuming houseboat that's become a tourist landmark.

But Seattle's romantic locales don't stop there: On the wilder side, the city in the Northwest is also the location of Escala, the luxury condominium building that's a setting for the erotic best-seller "Fifty Shades of Grey." But to get a glimpse inside that exclusive residence, where apartments have been selling for $400,000 on up, you might need to get pre-qualified.

Ruling coalition endorses new state in south India

NEW DELHI (AP) -- India's ruling coalition endorsed creating a new state in southern India, which immediately spurred activists to call for other long-standing demands for separate states to be met.

The United Progressive Alliance coalition unanimously agreed to endorse that a new state called Telangana be carved out of Andhra Pradesh state, civil aviation minister Ajit Singh told reporters Tuesday.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's Congress party also backed the formation of the state. The government will finish creating the state within the next four to five months, said Digvijay Singh, a top Congress party leader.

The large size of some of India's 28 states makes them difficult to administer and has prompted movements to divide them. Telangana would become India's 29th state.

Telangana supporters say the drought-prone northern area is underdeveloped and ignored by powerful politicians from southern Andhra Pradesh. Residents of the 10 districts that form Telangana say they are discriminated against in the allocation of state funds, water and jobs.

The decision is likely to be opposed by the rest of Andhra Pradesh, primarily because the proposed Telangana area would include Hyderabad, the state capital and industrial hub.

Police and paramilitary soldiers were deployed in Hyderabad and other parts of Andhra Pradesh to prevent protests after the announcement.

The demand for a separate state of Telangana has erupted sporadically since the 1950s, with hunger strikes and violent protests claiming about 1,000 lives over the past decade. Several protesters self-immolated to press for the creation of the state.

The protests gained strength in 2009 when veteran politician K. Chandrasekhara Rao began a hunger strike. After 11 days, the federal government agreed to split the state.

The government then delayed a decision while sporadic protests, both for and against the new state, gripped Andhra Pradesh.

Critics said the split would spur other demands for new states.

"The government has opened a Pandora's box. This will give rise to similar demands from several regions that are fighting for separate states," said Kalyani Shankar, a prominent political commentator.

Several parts of India - the Bundelkhand region in the central state of Madhya Pradesh, Vidarbha in western Maharashtra state and Gorkhaland in the eastern West Bengal state - face similar statehood movements, but the government has not made any moves to create states there.

On Tuesday, leaders of the Gorkhaland movement called for a three-day strike in the northern parts of West Bengal to press their demand.

"Our demand for Gorkhaland is older than the demand for Telangana. If the government announces a Telangana state, then it should also declare a Gorkhaland state," Gorkhaland leader Bimal Grung said.
