Ian Fraser Interview by Matthew J | Day in the Lyfe Graffiti ...

by Matthew J (@IamJamesMatthew)

There is no denying it; the retail music business has been in a serious decline. Big retail chains such as SAM THE RECORD MAN and CD Plus have been closing up shops cross-country and in similar fashion; many independently-owned record stores are closing their doors, as well. What is causing all this? The popular business notion is that downloadable music -by way of the internet- has taken money from the stores leaving them with no choice but to close their doors. In other words, we cannot compete with the internet so let?s just quit without putting up a fight.

Enter Ian Fraser, the owner and operator of OBSOLETE RECORDS, who rather than following the so-called ?popular notion? is going against the grain and providing his loyal and still growing customer base with the hard-to-find; sought-after physical records which the other stores aren?t carrying.

I sat down with Ian to talk about the current retail business, downloading music vs. owning physical recordings debate, his personal playlist, and more. Hard work is not a new concept and although he is not a fan of Curtis Jackson?s music, Ian does embody the hustler?s ambition: be your own boss, provide people with great music, and get paid while doing it.

obsolete records store front

We?ll start this off by having you introduce yourself to everybody reading this. Where are you from? What do you do? What is your story?

I?m Ian Fraser, the owner of Obsolete Records. We are located at 2454 Agricola Street in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada. I?m born and raised in Halifax and I love this city and that it embodies; including its many flaws.

How did you get your start in the music retail business?

I loved a lot of different music at an early age, my parents encouraged this love of music by purchasing cassettes that I wanted for various birthdays and Christmas?s my Dad bought me ?The Real Thing? by Faith No More and ?Appetite For Destruction? by Guns N Roses when I was nine; my Mom bought me Onyx?s ?Bacdafucup? and N.W.A.?s ?Niggaz4life? when I was 14 I got my first job at a record store when I was 19 and have worked at two other stores before deciding to open my own.

President Obama's Weekly Address: Honoring Our Fallen Heroes

Win McNamee/Getty Images(WASHINGTON) -- As Americans prepare to fire up the grill, open the pool and enjoy the holiday weekend, President Obama is paying tribute to the nation?s men and women in uniform, thanking them for their service and reaffirming his commitment to ?serve them and their families as well as they have served us.?
?
?Memorial Day is more than a three-day weekend. In town squares and national cemeteries, in public services and moments of quiet reflection, we will honor those who loved their country enough to sacrifice their own lives for it,? Obama said in his weekly address.
?
The President and First Lady will visit Arlington National Cemetery this Memorial Day to honor ?patriots of every generation who gave the last full measure of devotion, from Lexington and Concord to Iraq and Afghanistan.?
?
Later, Mr. and Mrs. Obama will join veterans at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, where they will begin to make the 50th anniversary of the war.
?
As the nation honors those ?who made the ultimate sacrifice,? the President recommitted to caring for those who serve alongside them.
?
?We have to serve them and their families as well as they have served us: By making sure that they get the healthcare and benefits they need; by caring for our wounded warriors and supporting our military families; and by giving veterans the chance to go to college, find a good job, and enjoy the freedom that they risked everything to protect,? he said.
?
?No words can ever bring back a loved one who has been lost. No ceremony can do justice to their memory. No honor will ever fill their absence,? Obama said. ?But on Memorial Day, we come together as Americans to let these families and veterans know that they are not alone. We give thanks for those who sacrificed everything so that we could be free. And we commit ourselves to upholding the ideals for which so many patriots have fought and died. ?

Dynamic duo leads Miami back to Eastern finals

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? With another season on the brink, Dwyane Wade and LeBron James took their two-man game to new heights.

Just like that, the Miami Heat and a Big Three-Minus-One are headed back to the Eastern Conference finals.

Wade scored 41 points, James added 28 and the Heat finished off the once-frisky Indiana Pacers 105-93 in Game 6 Thursday night, advancing to face either Boston or Philadelphia in the next round.

The way Miami's dynamic duo is playing, it may not matter who's got next.

"They're going to be tough to beat by anybody," Indiana coach Frank Vogel said.

This was a 4-2 triumph that came down to a trilogy, Wade and James responding with the most remarkable week of their high-powered partnership, just when it looked as though the Heat were down and might be out.

Over the course of three dazzling games, James scored 98 points, grabbed 34 rebounds and dished out 24 assists. Wade had 99 points, 22 rebounds and 11 assists. Chris Bosh, sidelined by an abdominal injury, wasn't missed at all.

"In the regular season, we've had some good games," Wade said. "But I don't know if we've ever had three in a row like that in the playoffs, the way we played off each other."

Of course, nothing less than an NBA title will do in South Beach.

Two series down, two to go.

One week earlier, Miami was down 2-1 after getting thumped 94-75 in Indianapolis. The fired-up Pacers had another game on their home court and a chance to build a commanding lead.

Wade and James simply refused to let it happen.

"We understand that when Chris went out, we had to step up," D-Wade said. "The team looked to us to lead."

The banged-up Heat will get a chance to relax a couple of days before worrying about the next opponent, who will be determined in Game 7 at Boston on Saturday. The conference finals start Monday in Miami.

Bosh hopes to return at some point, but it might not matter.

Not the way Wade and James are playing.

"Chris Bosh is an awesome basketball player, but when he goes down, that just means more touches for LeBron and Wade," Vogel said. "That's not exactly an advantage."

The Heat rallied from an early 11-point deficit, riding the hot hand of Wade in the opening half. He scored 26 points by the break, tying Tim Hardaway's 16-year-old franchise record for most playoff points in the first two quarters. James hit consecutive baskets with just over a minute remaining to close it out.

David West led Indiana with 24 points and all five starters were in double figures. Balance, it turned out, was no match for Wade and James.

"Guys are disappointed but understand that it's not our time yet," West said.

In a game of spurts, the decisive one came in the closing minutes of the third quarter.

The Pacers tied it at 66 on Darren Collison's 3-pointer, but it was all Heat the rest of the period. They closed on a 13-3 run, capped by Mario Chalmers' buzzer-beating 3 from the corner. Wade, who was on the bench getting his customary breather at the end of the quarter, leaped from his seat as the ball left Chalmers' hand at the far end, raced along the baseline and pumped his fist when it swished.

When Chalmers raced toward the Miami bench, Wade greeted him near the free throw line with a low-five.

"We just had a bad stretch," West said. "They got us in the third quarter."

Cheerleading aside, D-Wade did his best work while in the game. He dropped 11-of-16 shooting on the Pacers in the first half, but also made sure the MVP stayed involved, dishing off a behind-the-back pass to James for a thunderous jam.

"They're too good," West said. "They pressure you all over the place."

There was none of the nastiness that marked Game 5, when a bunch of flagrant fouls resulted in suspensions for two Miami players, co-captain Udonis Haslem and backup center Dexter Pittman. Pacers president Larry Bird was so disgusted with his team's performance in a 95-86 loss that he accused them of going "soft."

Toughness wasn't the problem this time. This was merely a Miami team on a mission, a mission that began in the summer of 2010 when the Heat signed James and Bosh to join Wade in a seemingly unbeatable trio. There was a glitzy introduction and predictions of multiple championships, which left the rest of the league seething and plenty of people cheering when Miami was knocked off in the NBA finals by the Dallas Mavericks last season.

Shaking off that disappointment, James had perhaps his greatest season yet. But it was Wade who took control in the decisive game against the Pacers. He sliced into the lane, throwing up a one-handed shot that looked like it might go over the backboard, only to catch the top of the glass and drop through, barely touching the twine. He delivered one final blow when he split West and George Hill, banking in the shot despite taking a knee from Hill that sent the Heat guard tumbling to the court.

"We just didn't have enough yet," Vogel said, "but we'll be back."

Chalmers finished with 15 points, while Mike Miller stepped up to provide some quality minutes, scoring 12 points on four 3-pointers to help fill the void without Haslem, Pittman and Bosh.

When Miller wasn't in the game, he stretched out along the baseline to cope with his various aches and pains, more comfortable that way than sitting in a chair. When coach Erik Spoelstra called his number, Miller summoned several of his teammates to help lift him up.

"He might be the toughest guy on the team," Wade said.

The Big Two aren't too shabby, either.

Notes: Indiana started 8 of 9 from the field, but went just 26 of 61 (43 percent) the rest of the way. ... The Heat held the Pacers to an average of less than 40 points in the second half over the last three games. ... Miami had only 10 turnovers, its fewest in the series.

Outdoor Furniture for a Summer Garden

Article Directory :: Home & Family Articles

The furniture you select for your summer garden should satisfy two main criteria: it should decoratively complement the garden area and it should also be comfortable enough to entice you to spend time in your garden. When it comes to choosing outdoor furniture for a summer garden the choices are vast in number and diverse in price.

If you have a cottage garden or if you simply like vintage style furniture, you would probably be attracted to the charming and somewhat nostalgic beauty of wrought iron furniture. Many wrought iron outdoor chairs feature graceful curves that blend in gently with a cottage garden theme. One of the most popular furniture arrangements involves placing a small table between two delicately designed chairs. A love seat with a wrought iron coffee table or two side tables is also a well-liked grouping. A glider is ideal when there's not enough space for a whole furniture grouping. Wrought iron bistro sets and dining sets allow you to throw an authentic garden party.

It's hard to find a more visually and physically relaxing style of outdoor furniture than all-weather rattan. There's a design to satisfy any decor preference you have. Rattan and casual comfort go hand in hand. That level of comfort extends to the more artistically designed contemporary styles of rattan outdoor furniture. Rattan furniture with well-defined lines and an espresso finish are ideal for a situation where you want your garden decor to correspond with the modern decor inside of your home. Modern and contemporary sets such as a lounge chair with ottoman and accompanying table or an outdoor rattan daybed and side table are just what you need to create the ultimate relaxation retreat in your garden.

Resin outdoor furniture is an affordable and attractive choice for a garden area. It is respected for its durability. It is weather-resistant, fade-resistant and basically maintenance-free. You have a wide variety of colour choices and designs to choose from. Resin outdoor chairs are lightweight and easy to move around in the garden. That can be considered a bonus feature when you want to sit specifically in the sun or shade and it allows you to relax near whichever flowers are most aromatic at the time.

These three types of outdoor furniture can easily be incorporated into any garden design. There are also other options to consider that cover the range from high-end teak furniture to furniture made of PVC, which is one of the most affordable options. Summer gardens should be enjoyed and spending time relaxing in your garden is one of the best ways to get the maximum amount of pleasure from the work you put into designing the garden.

News and Society -Crime News Blog: How to Catch a Fugitive ...

Fugitive Hunting Strategies

The primary job of a bounty hunter is to locate and apprehend fugitives that have failed to appear for a court date after posting bail. Because of the dangers involved it is necessary for a fugitive recovery agent to know the proper strategies and tactics to complete their task in a safe manner. So how do you begin to hunt for a fugitive? The situations change and many times the proper method to track a person will have to change on a case by case basis, however these are some general guidelines to keep in mind when tracking a fugitive.

Gathering Intelligence:
First and foremost it is necessary to know your target. Learning the history of the fugitive is imperative to apprehend them in a safe manner. Some questions a fugitive recovery agent needs to ask are:

Is the fugitive a violent offender?
Are they known to carry firearms?
Do they have any previous military or martial arts history?
Do they have a drug history?
Do they have a history with mental illness?

These questions can tell a bounty hunter a substantial amount about the safety precautions they need to take once the target is located. Based on this information the bounty hunter can determine if it is better to attempt to apprehend the subject in a public location, at their residence, or if someone is able to turn them in.

It is also important to determine if the target is in a relationship, if they own a vehicle, have any known locations of residence, hobbies and their common hang out spots. If for example a fugitive is known to like drinking a bounty hunter could start by asking around local bars to gather additional information.

Finding Contacts:
Finding any contacts associated with the fugitive is another area of importance when attempting to locate an individual. First a bounty hunter would want to contact the person who signed the bond as they are ultimately responsible for the appearance of the bailee. In many cases this will be a parent of relative who are concerned with the wellbeing of their loved one. In some instance they will work with the bounty hunter or bail bonds company to assist with the apprehension of the fugitive, however there are just as many instances of family and friends trying to throw off bounty hunters.

It is important to assess early on whether the family and friends of the fugitive are cooperative or whether they are trying to conceal the bail jumper. This will ultimately lead to the strategy that the bounty hunter will need to employ to successfully detain their target. In some instances it is essential to feed the fugitive's contacts with misinformation in order to allow them to lead the subject into a trap.

Equipment:
The use of proper equipment can make the difference of saving lives when apprehending a fugitive. Non lethal weapons are preferred by most bounty hunters due to the backlash of an investigation from law enforcement officials in the event that the apprehension turns deadly. A dead fugitive as well will not return the bond cost for the bail bonds agency. A bail bondsman and bounty hunter are in the business of capturing targets and bringing them in alive to face justice.

Along with adequate non lethal weapons a bounty hunter must have the proper protective gear including bullet proof vests, gloves, and clothing that suits a foot chase. The vehicles used by a bounty hunter should also conceal their stakeout operations while not appearing inconspicuous in the area surrounding the stakeout location. Changing vehicles frequently as well as the actual agent conducting the stakeout operation can dramatically improve its overall effectiveness.

In some instances it is necessary to carry a firearm depending on the criminal history of the bail jumper. Many bounty hunters do carry firearms however there is an equal amount that rely primarily on non lethal weapons. Handcuffs are another item that all bounty hunters should carry. Once a target is detained they will ultimately need to be transported back to the police station so an effective transport vehicle should be considered as well to ensure the proper levels of security for this task.

The Stakeout:
Staking out a target's location is one of the most tedious and unrewarding aspects of being a bounty hunter although this is imperative in locating a subject. Many man hours are spent remaining patient and determined waiting for a fugitive to slip up during their run from the law. Watching the families' area or residence, local gas stations, bars, grocery stores, convenience stores, dry cleaners, restaurants and laundromats are areas that are commonly observed because they provide services which almost everyone is bound to use at some point in their day to day lives.

Staking out a location is much more effective in smaller communities as there are less locations to manage and a particular individual is easier to notice in a smaller community. Despite the effectiveness of this strategy it is one which is employed in practically every man hunt.

Detaining a Fugitive:
Once a fugitive is located a comprehensive plan must be devised to apprehend the subject in the safest manner possible. If the fugitive is a flight risk a trap will have to be employed to ensure they do not escape the fugitive recovery team tracking them. Failing to detain a fugitive on the first attempt will commonly spook them resulting in the target laying low and taking further precautions to remain in hiding. This results in additional man hours to re-locate and apprehend the target, and since a bail bonds company is typically on a timeline to bring their subject in this can waste valuable time to recover the cost of the bond.

The strategy and tactics used by a bounty hunter once the subject is located will ultimately determine the success of the overall operation. Making the first apprehension attempt count will typically separate the successful and unsuccessful bounty hunters. Ensuring the proper equipment is available is another area that must be assessed in a detailed fashion by the fugitive recovery team. Don't bring a knife to a gunfight, or mace or even a taser for that reason.

Successful Manhunting
Strategy, tactics, foresight and the proper equipment are essential to tracking and apprehending a fugitive successfully. This is one of the most difficult aspects of working within the bail bonds industry. In many cases a bail bonds agency will have a team of bounty hunters separate from their bail bondsmen so that each team can focus on its area of expertise however it is just as common for a bail bondsman to take on the role of the fugitive recovery agent due to lack of resources.

However these jobs are divided an essential aspect of the industry is the knowledge and employment of proper strategy in a variety of situations. The training of a fugitive recovery agent must mirror that of law enforcement of military personnel in order to provide an effective operating team that can maintain longevity through situations of adverse conflict.

Bail Bonds Guys is a bail bondsman, bounty hunter, and bail bonds agency network dedicated to providing the most reliable information and news in the industry.

Wall Street girds for Facebook frenzy

Wall Street and investors around the globe girded for a frenzy for Facebook shares with investors hungry for a piece of the social network's share offering expected to be launched on Friday.

In the past few days, Facebook boosted the estimated price for the shares, placing a value on the hugely popular site at around a whopping $100 billion, and added to the number of shares being offered from insiders.

With a definitive price still not set, Facebook estimated shares to be offered at between $34 to $38 per share, translating to a value of $93-104 billion for the company.

The Wall Street Journal said Facebook -- which has 900 million members worldwide -- was nearing a final offering price of $38 per share, which would value the company at $104 billion, the highest ever for a US firm at an IPO.

London bookmakers were anticipating a stampede for shares. At the betting firm Spreadex, clients have been speculating that shares could rise above $56 after their first day.

"Our market on the percentage change in the price of Facebook shares after the first day's trading has seen appetite from clients in buying on the price as the big day approaches, moving the spread up from 30-35 percent earlier in the week to 35-40 percent," Spreadex spokesman Andy MacKenzie said.

Spreadex noted that among other tech IPOs, LinkedIn rose 109 percent the first day while Groupon surged 31 percent. Social game maker Zygna lost ground on its first day.

But MacKenzie noted that "we have had some customers holding back based on their belief that Facebook shares may well fall in value after the furor over the initial launch has died down."

Lou Kerner, founder of The Social Internet Fund, said he expects a strong response.

"US institutional demand has been good, the retail and global demand has been overwhelming," he said.

London-based Hargreaves Lansdown Stockbrokers said Facebook may have a hard time living up to lofty expectations but pointed out that it is "a relatively developed company which can display 'real' income and profit."

"There are extremely high expectations for the company's prospects and perhaps on that basis it deserves the punchy valuation it has been given, the brokerage said in a note to clients.

"It is then down to the company to convince investors and analysts that the confidence was well founded and that Facebook will be mentioned in the same breath as the likes of Apple and Google in the years to come."

The excitement about social networks was highlighted separately when Pinterest, a bulletin-board style sharing website, attracted a $100 million investment led by Japanese online giant Rakuten, with existing investors Andreessen Horowitz, Bessemer Venture Partners, and FirstMark Capital, and "a number of angel investors."

Under the share plan, Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg will hold 55.8 percent of the voting power, down slightly from an estimated 57.3 percent. The 28-year-old controls the firm through a dual class stock structure and certain shares that give him a "proxy" for voting.

The net proceeds to the company were estimated at $6.4 billion, the filing with regulators said.

At $38 per share, the IPO would raise $18.4 billion, one of the largest on record.

According to the Wall Street Journal, the rise in shares announced this week comes from a number of insiders cashing out bigger portions of their stake, including Goldman Sachs, the equity firm Tiger Global Management and Peter Thiel, one of the first Facebook investors.

The Journal said 57 percent of shares will be from insiders, which is an unusually high percentage. Under Wall Street rules, these investors would have to wait six months to sell any shares not offered at the IPO.

Samsung Galaxy S III user manual appears in all its 181-page glory

Android Central

If you've been struggling to pass the time awaiting the moment when you can buy a Samsung Galaxy S III for yourselves, Samsung's got you covered. The full user manual for the international version of  the device is now out there on the interwebs for anyone interested in reading it. All 181 pages of it. Will it contain anything we haven't already covered? Most probably not, but it's there for those who want it.

The only contentious point arising so far seems to surround the supported microSD card sizes. Page 20 of the manual states that the Galaxy S III will support sizes up to 32GB. We know from the keynote in London though, that the initial presentation of the S III's specs showed support for 64GB cards. Could be a mis-print. Or, there could be something more sinister behind it. For now though, we'll hedge our bets on the first one. In any case, hit the source link below if you're interested in taking a look.

Focus on the Family Community: Relationships and Marriage: when ...

I am reaching out here because I'm just not sure where else to turn. I can't have these conversations with my friends anymore.. they are so "over" it. I can't afford to see a counselor right now (WHY is counseling so expensive??), I am sort of new to an area and we haven't found a church yet - but I am just in desperate need of some advice or guidance, something.

?

I have been married for almost 12 years. The first year of our marriage was our best, though it quickly became evident that I had not married the man I thought I had. His selfishness and insensitivity quickly surfaced after we were in the bonds of marriage.. and he even admitted to me in our first year that he thought he could treat me any way he wanted because we were now married. A decade and three kids later (2 of them "special needs").. it has been a rollercoaster of good times and bad times, but way more bad times than good. I have tried to love "even when I hate him", hang in there, constantly work for the best. But I sit here as a very, very broken woman in my late 30s...depressed, overweight, and can't seem to get a handle on any situation in life anymore. This is a far cry from the woman I was 12 years ago.. the fit runner who was joyful and was often made fun of for being so happy and optimistic. This relationship has taken such a toll on me.. and all of my efforts to improve myself (weight loss, counseling, mind over matter, having a career, throwing myself into my kids, etc.) have fallen flat.

?

Through all that, I have tried everything I know how to work on my marriage.. but it has been like beating a brick wall. He "gets it" sometimes, and things get better for a short time, but then they always go back to where they were, and sometimes worse. What is the problem? He is emotionally abusive, and emotionally distant. He puts his needs before mine, constantly. He has anger issues, along with hereditary mental illness.. severe anxiety and depression. (I could write a whole other post on being the spouse of a mentally ill husband). He constantly makes promises he doesn't keep. His is lazy, to an extreme level. He procrastinates everything.. which has led to some poor financial decisions that has left us in a terrible financial bind (most of it he hid from me until I had to know). The financial strain in our marriage/family is overwhelming. But again, despite all efforts to fix that and make it better.. it only gets worse. And then there is the matter of our faith in God. Mine is deep, and life-consuming. His is merely belief. He fights the Lord in his life on a daily basis. So much of the time, I feel completely unequally yoked.

?

We have "tried", over the years, to make things better. We even moved to a whole new area about a year ago to give us a fresh start and help us try to bond with one another. What I've discovered is that I barely have a friend, let alone a husband. I am reaching a very sad, desperate end...

?

Now.. let me rule out a few of the things I've heard over the years:

Does he have and keep and job? Yes.

Is he an alcolholic? No.

Is he addicted to pornography? No. (at least not to my extensive knowledge)

Has he cheated on me? No. (not to my knowledge)

Is he present in the home? Yes. (at least physically)

Is he a good father. Yes. (good enough)

Does he love you? He says he does, he says I am his world. (but they are only words, no action backs that up)

?

..so it's really not "that bad", right?

?

Well, it is. And I am circumstancially depressed to a very deep level.. I'm about to beg my doctor to put me on a high-dose of antidepressants just so I won't emotionally feel anything anymore. And that seems to be the only way I can even fathom functioning "for the rest of my life".

?

What do I do? Do I keep giving him chance after chance? (Proverbs says "hope deferred makes the heart sick"). Do I go on living like this? If I have to leave him... oh, there is so much to figure out? And I don't want to take my kids away from their father. Not to mention, I have lupus.. what if something happens and I can't care for my kids as a single mother?

?

I do realize I am not perfect, and have never ever claimed to be. I have so many faults it would take me a week to list them. But I am constantly trying to work on my issues, and make myself a better person. I want to be self-aware and not continue to live in such a way that is detremental to myself and those around me. But it's almost as if he has NO concept of what any of that means.

?

I know these details are scarce.. there are so many details over these 12 years it is impossible to share them all. I guess I just need a sounding board to know if I need to stay in this fight or if I'm fighting a sure-lose battle here. I do believe that everyone is capable of change for the better.. but in this case, I am really questioning that.

Tizen gets play time on Samsung Galaxy S II HD LTE, shows off new features

Image

Slowly but surely, Tizen's picking up momentum. In just the last two weeks we've witnessed version 1.0 of the OS get released, a prototype device made by Samsung, an official pledge of support by Sprint and even a full-out developer's conference. One thing we haven't yet seen, however, is the Linux-based firmware running on an existing Android phone. At the aforementioned convention's keynote, Jong-Deok Cohoi -- EVP of the Tizen Technical Steering Group -- showed off a few more features, such as photo gallery, videos and live calls... on what appears to be a Samsung Galaxy S II HD LTE. This is great news, since it looks like Tizen supports at least some of Sammy's handsets -- in dev guise, at the very least. For now, curious open-source fans should head below to see the full video.

Panasonic racks up a record loss for 2012, looks forward to profits and a partner for OLED TVs

Panasonic racks up a record loss for 2012, looks forward to profits and a partner for OLED TVs

Panasonic's yearly earnings are in and the red ink added up to a record $9.7 billion net loss for 2011. Number one on incoming president Kazuhiro Tsuga's list is turning around the company's TV division, where its heavy investments in both plasma and LCD manufacturing resulted in heavy losses. Currently the company expects a better result in both next year after 2011's write downs and restructuring, although its projections see total sales falling from 17.3 million last year to 15.5 million. Panasonic is expected to follow Samsung and LG into large screen OLED HDTV production and outgoing prez Fumio Ohtsubo mentioned it would likely look for a partner there. Sumitomo has been rumored as a potential ally in the past, though a preference for run-flat tires could not be confirmed at press time.

NDS' Surfaces turns your wall into a TV, or a TV into a wall... one of those two

Image

Remember the wall that was also a television in Total Recall? That's the inspiration behind Surfaces -- a concept device produced by British cable mavens NDS. Abandoning the idea of a single screen, the company mounted six displays into a wall that offers up TV and internet content when on, and blends into your wallpaper when off. The setup will even control your room's lighting for those particularly emotive X Factor performances and you control the whole thing with your iPad (while tweeting, bitchily about the show). However, before you storm the company's Staines headquarters looking to buy one, there are a few obstacles you should know about. Firstly, this amazing setup cost over $30,000 and secondly, it only really works if you've got plenty of content filmed in 4K -- but don't worry, Peter Jackson's working on it.

Procedure offers hope in type 1 diabetes

New strategy proves curative in more than half of mice tested

Web edition : 2:44 pm

A three-pronged strategy ? to knock out renegade immune cells, replace them and revitalize other cells that make insulin ? might reverse type 1 diabetes. Scientists report in the May 9 Science Translational Medicine that seven of 12 diabetic mice treated with this combination were cured even after having lost the ability to make insulin for several weeks, the equivalent of a human patient who has needed insulin injections for a couple of years.?

Type 1 diabetes often strikes at an early age and relegates a person to a lifetime of blood sugar tests and insulin shots. The condition results when one?s own immune cells kill insulin-making cells called beta cells housed in the pancreas. A few of these beta cells usually survive, but don?t produce adequate insulin to process sugars.

In the new study, researchers used specially designed antibodies and other drugs in the mice to first wipe out rogue beta-cell killers from the immune system called CD3 and CD8 T cells.

The mice then received a mismatched bone marrow graft to replace the immune cells. The mismatch seems necessary to prevent the newly developing T cells from targeting beta cells, says study coauthor Miao Wang, an endocrinologist at the City of Hope Beckman Research Institute in Duarte, Calif. Recipient mice also got stripped-down T cells from the spleens of the mismatched donor mice. These cells may prevent a backlash effect called graft-versus-host disease in which transplanted tissue attacks its new host.

To restore insulin production by beta cells, the mice received hormone and growth-factor injections for 60 days.

The seven mice cured of type 1 diabetes regained about 20 percent of their normal supply of beta cells, which made enough insulin to fend off high blood sugar. The beta cells were a mix of old cells that began to multiply after treatment and new beta cells with mysterious origins. ?We believe there are pre-existing beta-cell progenitors inside the pancreas,? and these developed into new beta cells, says Wang.

The seven animals remained free of diabetes 150 days after treatments ended.

Currently in humans, the only cure for type 1 diabetes is a transplant of pancreatic ?islets? containing beta cells. ?It has many limitations,? Wang says. A single transplant typically requires multiple donors, and recipients need immune-suppressing drugs indefinitely, she says. Also, a 2006 report showed that two-thirds of islet transplant recipients were back on insulin injections within two years of the operation.

?If our therapy could successfully translate to humans,? Wang says, ?I think it could be a replacement for islet transplantation.?

Anita Chong, an immunologist at the University of Chicago, says the researchers might need to test the therapy in nonhuman primates to show that the first step will knock out the rogue CD3 and CD8 T cells. Also, scientists will need to ascertain whether the beta-cell boosters will work without adverse effects, she says.

How Telerobotics Could Help Humanity Explore Space

GREENBELT, Md. ? Advances in telerobotics are in high gear here on Earth, enabling scientists to plumb the deepest oceans, extract resources from dangerous mines and even carry out high-precision surgery from thousands of miles away.

Now researchers are considering ways to adopt and adapt telerobotics for more far-reaching duties ? in outer space. The ability to extend human cognition to the moon, Mars, near-Earth objects and other accessible bodies remotely could curb the challenges, cost and risks of deep-space exploration, some scientists say.

Astronauts, robotics experts and space scientists and engineers discussed such possibilities in the first-of-its-kind Exploration Telerobotics Symposium, held here May 2-3 at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center.

Extending human cognition and dexterity

The idea is that future space exploration crews could teleoperate systems deployed on planetary bodies from some distance away. Tucked inside a high-tech habitat circling a planet or perched in a module at a Lagrange point, astronauts can use high-quality telepresence to conduct surface operations on other worlds, including scouting out and mining valuable resources. [Gallery: Asteroid Mining Idea Takes Off]

While landing humans on these surfaces may be an eventual ambition, extending human cognition and dexterity to these locales via telepresence might be achieved on a shorter timescale and at a more modest cost, researchers said.

Establishing on-orbit proximity telerobotic control for the surface of the moon could be a good place to start, they added, with more far-flung destinations perhaps following later.

Credible strategy

The symposium underscored for the space community the meaning and potential importance of telepresence as "a credible exploration strategy," said astronomer Dan Lester of the University of Texas in Austin, who was a key organizer of the meeting.

"Space is big, and the speed of light is small enough by comparison that we often don?t feel much 'presence' with our sensory extensions we send out into space in the form of robots," Lester told SPACE.com. As such, we really don't have any experience with space telepresence, even for such relatively close bodies as the moon and asteroids, he added.

Lester said that there are countless lessons to be learned from the terrestrial telerobotics experts who attended the meeting. They brought a wide range of experience, from looking for oil and gas reserves in the oceans to performing telerobotic surgery and mining operations.

"That's all happening right now, in a big way, and space exploration has a lot to learn from those endeavors," Lester said. "They don't use space-qualified hardware, but their operations management and protocols have important lessons for us."

Terrestrial teachings

Similar in outlook is James Garvin, the chief scientist at NASA Goddard who helped chair the recent meeting.

Garvin's personal view is that the growing body of terrestrial experience with telerobotics in medicine, sea-floor exploration, mining and unmanned aircraft offers many fundamental lessons. That knowledge and know-how, he told SPACE.com, can be extended both to near-space locales like the International Space Station and to deep-space destinations, to the advantage of science and engineering capabilities.

"My general feeling is that low-latency telerobotics is a critical capability that must be investigated," Garvin said, "so that future human-robotic scientific activities can open up new frontiers in our scientific understanding of Mars, the moon, asteroids, Venus" and other locations.

Experience gap

"Clearly, there are local settings and environments where human field explorers on other worlds should never go," Garvin emphasized. And in such places, even very local telerobotic operations with machines there and people in nearby safe havens could be essential, he said.

Garvin did point out that, on the science side, there is a profound lack of real experience with low-latency telepresence here on Earth in geological field situations.

"This experience gap limits our understanding of how to develop the required engineering and technology capabilities to use low-latency telepresence in deep-space field science, on the moon, Mars, asteroids or beyond," Garvin said. More work needs to be done in this area, he added.[Future Visions of Human Spaceflight]

Brain power

The computational crunching power of robots was addressed by Brian Wilcox, manager of Space Robotics Technology at NASA?s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif.

"Moore's law has been operating for 50 years, with about an order of magnitude increase in computational throughput every five years," Wilcox said.

This means that the throughput per wafer ? at a roughly constant fabrication cost of under $10,000 ? has increased from about the equivalent of one neuron on a 1.5-inch wafer using 1965 fabrication technology, to about 10 billion neurons using 2015 fabrication technology on an 18-inch wafer. Those wafers are just now going into production around the world, he said.?

Wilcox observed that 10 billion neurons is about the equivalent of the human brain.

"Today, a game console, about the most capable consumer product in terms of throughput, has about the equivalent performance of the best invertebrate animal, the octopus," Wilcox said. "Within the next 10 to 15 years, we will likely witness robot performance marching through all of vertebrate evolution, up to and including humans."

Redefining 'exploration'

A key and perhaps overriding issue, Lester concluded, is the extent to which the public and Congress can buy in to an exploration strategy that does not involve humans going all the way to an exploration site.

In many respects, Lester added, what telepresence is making us do is redefine what we mean by the word "exploration."

"We should understand that it is precisely the explosion of technological capability that even allows us to talk about doing telepresence," Lester said.

"Forty years ago, when we wanted to put human cognition on the moon, there was exactly one way to do it ? putting people there ? boots on the ground. That's what we did. But it's no longer the only option," he added.

Leonard David has been reporting on the space industry for more than five decades. He is a winner of last year's National Space Club Press Award and a past editor-in-chief of the National Space Society's Ad Astra and Space World magazines. He has written for SPACE.com since 1999.
