MIAMI (AP) ? From the T-shirt and hoodie sales to trademarking slogans like "Justice for Trayvon" to the pass-the-hat rallies that bring in thousands, the case of an unarmed black teenager killed by a neighborhood watch volunteer is quickly turning into an Internet-fueled brand.

Websites are hawking key chains bearing Trayvon Martin's likeness. His parents have bought two trademarks, saying they hope to raise money to help other families struck by tragedy. Trayvon clothes, bumper stickers, buttons and posters are up for grabs on eBay.

Vendors selling Martin T-shirts and hoodies have become fixtures at rallies in Sanford, the central Florida town where Martin was shot last month. At one Sanford rally this week, a man had a variety of T-shirts laid out on the ground as marchers went by, yelling out, "I've got every size!"

The Martin shooting by neighborhood watch volunteer George Zimmerman, who says he shot the 17-year-old Miami teen in self-defense, has inflamed racial tensions across the country, brought out thousands for rallies, prompted a civil rights probe and a personal reference to the case by President Barack Obama.

A phenomenon on that scale is bound to be commercialized, said Donna Hoffman, a marketing professor at the University of California-Riverside.

"People can start to wear their feelings and emotions. It makes sense, even if there's a profit motive," Hoffman said. "There's a legitimate interest in sharing the pain, and these products do that."

Van Johnson, who designs T-shirts and other apparel in Charlotte, N.C., said he initially wanted to come up with something for his 12-year-old son to show solidarity with Martin's supporters. He produced a color drawing based on a photograph of Martin wearing a hoodie, which the teenager was wearing on the night he was killed.

"I really don't expect to make more than $200 at the most," Johnson said. "I'm happy some people bought my products, that way a few people will have a very nice design on their shirt or hoodie to show their support."

Karriem Muhammad, who runs Young Nation Apparel in St. Louis, is selling a separate hoodie for $35 with the words "Please Don't Shoot Me I Only Have Skittles And A Drink!!!" Martin was returning from a convenience store with the candy and iced tea when he was confronted by Zimmerman.

"We really just kind of put the shirt out there this week. It's not necessarily profit at all," Muhammad said. "I wanted to bring some awareness to the issue. I felt it would be a good way to expose the store, to get our name out there."

Zimmerman, 28, who has a white father and Hispanic mother, has not been charged. Martin's parents have demanded he be arrested. The U.S. Justice Department has launched a probe to look for possible civil rights violations; a special state prosecutor is also investigating. Jackelyn Bernard, spokeswoman for special prosecutor Angela Corey, said Wednesday the investigation could take weeks and said it's unclear if a grand jury will be empaneled.

Hoffman said it's difficult to gauge how the Trayvon sales might stack up against those from similar cases, such as the 1992 Los Angeles riots following the Rodney King beating, because those were before the explosion of Internet marketing.

"Anyone can do it with any image," she said.

Martin's mother, Sybrina Fulton, headed off potential profit-seekers by filing trademark applications last week for the words "Justice For Trayvon" and "I Am Trayvon." The applications say the slogans may be used in digital media formats including CDs and DVDs. A family attorney said Wednesday the purpose is mainly to prevent others from exploiting Martin's image.

"It wasn't to make money off Trayvon's name, it was to stop the exploitation of Trayvon's name," said the attorney, Natalie Jackson. "We wanted this family to own their child's legacy."

A sign company called FamilyGraphix decided this week to pull its Martin-related decals after learning of Fulton's move. One such decal, which was to sell for $8, said "Don't Shoot Me, All I Have Is A Bag of Skittles."

Johnson, the T-shirt designer, questioned Fulton's move.

"You would think the parents of Trayvon Martin would encourage the spreading of their son's name and image," he said. "As a parent of four, I personally would welcome any and all exposure. I would want my son's name everywhere."

At rallies and church services, thousands of dollars in pledges have been made to help Fulton and Tracy Martin, Martin's father, pay expenses including travel to events in Washington and New York, Jackson said. At one early rally, the Rev. Al Sharpton asked people to make out checks to Fulton and put them in buckets that were passed around.

"Let's show the world we're going to finance our own movement," said Sharpton, who pledged $2,500 himself.

The case has had other benefits for involved organizations. More than 30,000 people signed an NAACP petition to Florida prosecutors in just a 24-hour period. Eric Wingerter, spokesman for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored people, says the organization hasn't used the case as a fundraising tool but has seen an uptick in memberships.

At some point, Hoffman said, the Trayvon Martin brand could wear thin if it's overused.

"People might feel, 'I'm sick of hearing about this.' That feeling could be accelerated if everywhere you turn, there are people wearing their hearts on their sleeve," Hoffman said. "All this merchandise out there will start to have a taint in the mind of the public."

NOM Launches Boycott of Starbucks Over Same Sex Marriage Stance

So this article was brought to my attention by one of my dearest friends and coworker. This might be ?old hat ? since it was last week but it spoke to me in a big way.

This article basically stated??NOM decided to organize a boycott, dubbed the ?Dump Starbucks? campaign, because the company?s corporate?leadership?actively supported efforts to legalize same-sex marriage.?

I realize that Starbucks is one of the top internationally known companies in the world. I know that we serve all people from all different walks of life everyday in every country. So why the fuss ? Well, to draw attention naturally.(?Play the victim?, if you will).

Here is what was said

?Jonathan Baker, director of NOM?s Corporate Fairness Project, told The Christian Post that Starbucks? support for same-sex marriage goes beyond a mere statement from an executive.

?The support is not just the personal endorsement of a senior executive, but is the official corporate position of the company,? said Baker.

?Obviously this position does not reflect the views of all customers and employees and the NOM protest and dumpstarbucks.com is designed to enable these customers and employees to have a voice.?

Everyone is entitled to an opinion. BUT,Is it that pain staking and unbearable for you that it causes you not to partake in a connection with another human being? (I know that some countries have religious and moral values that go against homosexuality. I respect that.)How would you know if the person in front of you is LGBT?or straight? Why would you pass any judgement based of assumption? I know the article states that the boycott is against the company,but it also affects people who work for this company who are straight or gay.I realize that some people( coworkers and customers) do not share in the same opinion about same-sex marriage and that is respectable.

Having worked for this company going on 2 yrs , I have learned that this really is a genuinely great company to work for. Here is one of the reasons why?

Everyday I work with people who have life long partners or have same-sex relationships (gay/lesbian) and I work with people who are straight. I make connections with all sorts of people. Not once have I questioned the integrity of my coworkers nor my customers, asked what is their sexuality nor their religion.( personally I think is disrespectful boundary to cross to ask such a direct question) If they tell me that specific information then great if not , great I respect them. We are all at Starbucks to share our common love of coffee, not of political issues.

That statement I feel (in my opinion) is firm for every Starbucks. (There is so much I would like to say on this issue but I will keep it brief and professional.) In conclusion, this makes me proud to be who I am ,?It makes me proud to work for a Fortune 500 company that has a great impact on culture and livelihoods; embracing same-sex marriage and lifestyles. Vets say dogs, cats turn old halfway through life

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Age may creep up on man, but his best friend gets there at warp speed.

Going from pup to grandpup doesn't leave much prime time under American Veterinary Medical Association labels that cats and small dogs are geriatric at 7 ? and large dogs at 6.

But not everyone agrees, and rescuers say those definitions can be a death sentence to older animals in need of homes.

Dr. Emily Pointer, staff internist and medical coordinator at the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals' Bergh Memorial Animal Hospital in New York, said she considers the last third of life the sunset years.

"That seems fairly crazy," she said of the AMVA designations. "I would never consider a person in their 40s or 50s to be senior."

The AVMA said the oldest cat on record was 34, the oldest dog was 29.

Forget the notion that seven dog years equal one human year, the AVMA said. A 7-year-old dog weighing less than 50 pounds is like a 44- to 47-year-old human; 10 equals 56- to 60-year-old humans; 15 is like a 76- to 83-year-old; and 20 is like a 96- to 105-year-old human, the group said.

Pet health improved in the 1950s and '60s when commercial dog food and vaccinations became popular and spaying and neutering increased, said Stephen Zawistowski, ASPCA executive vice president and science adviser.

Technology has advanced and today's owners are more willing to go the distance for their pets, Pointer said.

"In the past, if your cat was diagnosed with diabetes, the recommendation was probably to euthanize the cat. Now, a lot fewer people are willing to do that because it's a treatable disease," Pointer said.

Kristin Dewey of Los Angeles has an 18-year-old Ragdoll cat named Cokie. He fell from an 80-foot palm tree 16 years ago and seemed OK until four years ago when something temporarily paralyzed him and left him incontinent.

"Indoor-only cats that are loved and treated like family start to get old around 15 but can still live good lives until 19 or more. They may be a little creaky and have some health issues, but so do we all," Dewey said.

Pointer agreed: "Well-loved pets live longer than unloved pets."

"We find that most dogs become geriatric after age 12, and that at 12-ish they are like humans at 65," said Judith Piper, founder and executive director of the rescue group Old Dog Haven in Lake Stevens, Wash.

Most shelters consider dogs old at 8, Piper said, so Old Dog Haven works with dogs 8 and up.

The group tries to place the 8- to 12-year-olds they rescue from shelters and find final refuge homes for those over 12.

At age 14, Solomon is one of those final refuge or hospice dogs. Part Dalmatian and part German shepherd, he has been with Lisa Black for 30 months.

Black owns the Stardust Salon and Spa in Seattle and Solomon goes to work with her every day to greet customers. "If they don't like him, it's not the place for them," Black said.

"Old dogs are usually good with other dogs and housebroken. They are easy and don't require a lot of trips to the park. They are usually happy with us and do whatever we want," she said.

Losing them is hard, she said, but you focus on the dog. "It's what Old Dog Haven does so they don't end up alone in a shelter. We give them a happy ending," Black said.

"Even if the time they have with the dog is short, it's worth it," Piper added.

Dori Repuyan of Columbus, Ohio, says Tucker, a 60-pound German shepherd-beagle mix her family rescued nine years ago is between 11 and 13.

She worries that calling dogs old so young will cost them good homes because "people don't want old dogs."

Tucker started showing his age a few years ago, Repuyan said. He stopped running with her, limited his walking and had trouble jumping on the bed. He started going gray and when he tore a ligament, developed weight problems. Repuyan and her husband had two children and it seemed to depress Tucker, she said.

They rescued Phoebe, a small, young dog that brought Tucker out of his funk. However, Tucker now sees the vet more often, gets a supplement for arthritis and is no longer allowed on the stairs.

"It's not so much that pets are living longer than their life expectancy, although they are, but we are taking better care of them and they are surviving longer. Sixty is the new 40 is true for pets," said Fadra Nally, a writer and blogger from Raleigh, N.C.

Dogs don't have middle age, she said.

At 6 or 7, pets can experience kidney failure, digestion problems, arthritis, obesity, teeth trouble or other ailments that can be treated.

Hotchner has two older dogs with knee problems. They had surgeries, are on medication and undergoing stem cell therapy harvested from their own belly fat, she said.

The quality of their lives has been extended decisively because of those things, she said.

Warming 'may rise by 3C' by 2050

Global temperatures could rise by 1.4-3.0C (2.5-5.4F) above levels for late last century by 2050, a computer simulation has suggested.

Almost 10,000 climate simulations were run on volunteers' home computers.

The projections, published in Nature Geoscience, are somewhat higher than those from other models.

The researchers aimed to explore a wider range of possible futures, which they say helps "get a handle" on the uncertainties of the climate system.

People planning for the impacts of climate change need to consider the possibility of warming of up to 3C by 2050, even on a mid-range emission scenario, the researchers say.

The study - run through climateprediction.net with the BBC Climate Change Experiment - ran simulations using a complex atmosphere-ocean climate model.

The representations of physical parameters were varied between runs of the model, reflecting uncertainties about precisely how the climate system works.

And the forecast range was derived from models that accurately reproduced observed temperature changes over the last 50 years.

The low end of their range is similar to that of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in its 2007 report, but the high end is somewhat above the range their analysis produced.

'Innovative' ensemble

Myles Allen of the School of Geography and Environment and Department of Physics, Oxford University, principal investigator of climateprediction.net, said other climate modelling groups' data did not "set out to explore the full range of uncertainty, which is why studies like ours are needed."

The research was described as "an important step toward estimating uncertainty more comprehensively," by Gabi Hegerl, professor of climate system science at the University of Edinburgh.

The results were also described as "very promising" by Prof Corinne Le Quere, director of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research at the University of East Anglia.

"Better constrained climate projections are needed to help plan a wide range of adaptation measures, from sea defences to water storage capacity and biodiversity conservation areas," she added.

However, the research was questioned by Julian Hunt, emeritus professor of climate modelling at University College London.

He said: "I have reservations about relying on a model that combines land temperatures - which are clearly rising - with sea temperatures which can be subject to big decadal fluctuations."

He said the higher range of the prediction was looking "increasingly likely", but for three particular reasons:

release of methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, from seabed and land
"massive changes" in reflection of light at some places on the Earth's surface
reducing air pollution in Asia that will reflect less solar energy back into space.

General Electric?s financial unit may receive a debt rating from Moody?s Investors Services lower than the parent company?s for the first time in at least two decades because of higher risk.

The Aa2 grades of GE and General Electric Capital are both on review for possible downgrade and may ?no longer be equalized,? Moody?s said. GE, based in Fairfield, Conn., with operations in Fort Wayne, said a shift in Moody?s methodology, not the company?s creditworthiness, drove the move.

?It?s Moody?s deciding to change the rules of the game,? said Joel Levington, head of corporate credit at Brookfield Asset Management Inc. in New York. ?There?s not a lot as a company they can do about that.?

The Moody?s review is getting under way even as GE works to diversify funding at the finance unit by reducing borrowing in unsecured debt markets and seeking alternative sources of capital. Levington said he expects the review to have little or no effect on GE Capital?s debt prices.

"The side of Pakistan that is projected time and time again is negative," said Zahraa Saifullah, CEO of Hello! Pakistan. "There is a glamorous side of Pakistan, and we want to tap into that."

But celebrating the lives of Pakistan's most prosperous citizens is not without its critics in a country where much of the population lives in poverty. Advertising one's prosperity could be risky as well since kidnappings for ransom are on the rise and attracting attention from Islamist militants can mean death.

Wajahat Khan, a consulting editor at Hello! Pakistan, said they were cognizant of the sensitivity of publishing a glamour magazine in a conservative Muslim country where many people are struggling and planned to be "socially responsible and culturally aware."

"We are trying to be happy in a war zone," Khan said Saturday at a news conference with Saifullah and other members of the magazine's editorial staff. "We are trying to celebrate what is still alive in a difficult country."

Khan said they would do everything they could to protect the security of the people they profile, but he wasn't overly concerned.

"I don't think terrorist networks are going to be reading Hello! anytime soon," he said.

Pakistan already has a series of local publications that chronicle the lives of the wellheeled in major cities like Islamabad, Lahore and Karachi, especially as they hop between lavish parties. But the producers of Hello! Pakistan hope the magazine's international brand and greater depth will attract followers.

Hello! was launched in 1988 by the publisher of Spain's Hola! magazine and is now published in 150 countries. It's well-known for its extensive coverage of Britain's royal family and once paid $14 million in a joint deal with People magazine for exclusive pictures of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's newborn twins.

The market for English-language publications in Pakistan is fairly small. Most monthly and weekly magazines sell no more than 3,000 copies, said Khan, the consulting editor. But they hope to tap into the large Pakistani expatriate markets in the United Kingdom and the Middle East as well.

Hello! Pakistan will be published once a month and will cost about $5.50, twice as much as what many poor Pakistanis earn in a day. The first issue will be published in mid-April and will focus on the Pakistani fashion scene.

Saifullah, who grew up watching her mother and grandmother read Hello! as she hopped between London and Karachi, said it took her two years to convince the magazine to publish a local version in Pakistan.

"They were concerned about whether Pakistan was ready for a magazine like this," she said.

But Saifullah thinks the timing is perfect to showcase Pakistan's too often hidden treasures, citing Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy, who recently became the first Pakistani filmmaker to win an Oscar for a documentary about the plight of female victims of acid attacks in the country.

"We want to tap into the aesthetically beautiful, the athletic, the fashionable," said Saifullah. "There is so much going on on a daily basis that nobody ever covers. It's totally unexplored."
