JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Duval County boosters still need to raise $20,000 to $25,000 to save school sports this year.
Slow pitch softball, wrestling, lacrosse, boys soccer and girls soccer are the last remaining programs that need community support in order to have a season.
Both the softball and soccer teams are supposed to begin practice October 10, according to Duval County Athletic Director, Jon Fox.? He hopes to announce before that date that both of those sports have enough funding to play.? Practice for wrestling teams is supposed to begin October 24 and lacrosse teams should start hitting the field January 30.?
Fox said the school system started about $770,000 short for sports programs this year.? After cuts made to coaching staffs and bus routes, as well as the money raised so far from community fundraisers, the sports programs are well on their way to being safe this year.?
"I'm anxious for it to be over," said Fox.? "I'm anxious to be able to say that everything is back and we've raised the necessary funds and so we can start concentrating on next year, because I think it's going to be another lean year."?
However, Fox is not ready to put a "W" in the win column.? He does not want to announce that all the sports are back until after October's round of fundraisers.? Lacrosse will hold its first fundraiser on Saturday.
Any money raised beyond what the system needs to fund sports this year will go into next year's general sports fund.? Fox points out that will help every student athlete.
"One of the real beautiful things is watching kids of various sports, from various parts of town, from different high schools, working together... their common cause being to get their sport back in play," Fox shared.
Fox said he is planning to meet with some community leaders later this month to begin organizing a foundation that will make sure sports in Duval County never get this close to the chopping block again.
