Bangkok flood defenses hold amid high tides (AP)

BANGKOK ? The complex network of flood defenses shielding Thailand's capital from the worst floods in nearly 60 years mostly held Saturday as coastal high tides hit their peak. While the city center was protected, Bangkok's northern outskirts remained inundated along with much of the rest of the country.

Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra said Saturday that the floodwaters that have wreaked havoc to provinces north of Bangkok in the last several weeks had started to recede, and she urged citizens to let the crisis take its course.

"We have the good news that the situation in the central region has improved as runoff water gradually decreased," she said. "I thank people and urge them to be more patient in case this weekend is significant because of the high tide."

Fear gripped Bangkok early in the day as tides along the Gulf of Thailand crested at about 9 a.m. and pushed the city's main waterway, the Chao Phraya River, to its brink. Waves reached a maximum height of 8.1 feet (2.47 meters) above sea level ? just barely contained by the 8.2-foot flood walls protecting much of the inner city, according to Bangkok Metropolitan Administration official Adisak Kantee.

The tide was short of the expected 8.2 feet (2.5 meters) predicted by the Thai Navy.

Bangkok remains under threat from coastal high tides set to swell the Chao Praya river early Saturday evening, Sunday morning and Monday, continuing to put more pressure on the city's dikes and sluices. Still, no major breaches were reported in the defenses after Saturday morning's expected peak.

City official Adisak told the Associated Press the city's concrete barriers "are efficiently protecting Bangkok from deluge," though he said smaller, private dikes might yet fail and breach the city center.

"The situation is so far under control," he said.

Overflows so far have lightly inundated riverside streets from Chinatown to the famed Temple of the Emerald Buddha. But the white-walled royal Grand Palace was dry, less than 24 hours after being ringed by ankle-deep water, and the landmark remained open to tourists. Many visitors carried parasols to protect themselves from the blistering sunshine.

Yingluck said in her weekly radio address Saturday that the government had implemented a plan to accelerate the drainage rate and that water in the greater Bangkok area should recede by the first week of November.

Meanwhile, the streets of downtown Bangkok ? the country's financial heart ? were bone-dry and bustling with taxis, restaurant-goers and tourists snapping pictures. But the city remained in peril, as high tides along the gulf were expected to crest again late in the day, threatening to obstruct the flood runoff from the north. The government also is worried major barriers and dikes could break.

Also on Saturday, the government's Flood Relief Operations Center was forced to move its headquarters from its base at Don Muang airport, which is used mostly for domestic flights, to a government building nearby after a power transformer malfunctioned. Authorities were forced to shut down the airport earlier in the week after floodwaters rushed in.

Relief center director Pracha Promnok said the government might extend a five-day public holiday beyond Monday if warranted. The holiday was declared to encourage people to leave the city for safer areas.

On Friday, saffron-robed monks and soldiers piled sandbags outside the capital's most treasured temples and palaces as the Chao Phraya swelled precariously beyond its banks. Army trucks dumped thousands of sandbags outside the riverside Siriraj Hospital, where Thailand's ailing and revered King Bhumibol Adulyadej has stayed since 2009.

Most of the water receded at low tide, but worried Bangkokians were buying up bright orange lifejackets and inflatable boats, fearing the worst is yet to come.

"You have to prepare," said Fon Kanokporn, a banker who bought a rubber boat from a store that had several hanging from trees out front as advertisements.

Employees at the shop said they had sold well over 3,000 boats in the last week. The brisk business is a measure of the fear gripping Bangkok and a reflection of the tragedy of neighboring provinces that have been submerged for weeks. Several buyers said they needed boats because their submerged homes outside the capital were no longer accessible by road.

Three months of relentless monsoon rains have caused the worst flooding in Thailand in more than half a century, triggering a national crisis that has severely tested Yingluck's government.

The water has crept from the central plains south toward the Gulf of Thailand for weeks, engulfing a third of the country's provinces and killing nearly 400 people and displacing 110,000 more. Now, Bangkok is in the way ? surrounded by behemoth pools of water flowing around and through the city via a complex network of canals and rivers.

Seven of Bangkok's 50 districts ? all in the northern outskirts ? are heavily flooded, and residents have fled aboard bamboo rafts and army trucks and by wading through waist-deep water. Eight other districts have seen less serious flooding.

Two Girl Scouts present educational app to big business (Yahoo! News)

Dallas-area scouts pushing more than cookies in today's digital age

Girl Scouts are becoming more and more high-tech, and the introduction of?new science and technology badges is merely one of the moves the organization is taking to ignite young women's interests in the fields. Thanks to the new level of involvement in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), a couple of scouts from Dallas, Texas were inspired to come up with a mobile?app idea on their own. And they're slated to pitch it tomorrow to executives from AT&T and Alcatel-Lucent for a chance to see their idea realized.

The girls (Grace Swierenga, 12, and Lindsey Hettish, 13) call their app Teachers Best Friend, and it's designed to help educators grade tests more efficiently. Now that?smartphones and?tablets are more popular than ever, encouraging girls to come up with app ideas is a great way to get them more involved in technology.

The Girl Scout organization?actively promotes involvement in the STEM fields by holding events such as The Women of AT&T's Technology Fair?that took place?this early October. Participants (young girls, scouts or not) were persuaded to compete in a tech-oriented contest that the aforementioned Dallas girl scouts won.

AT&T also donated $1 million to the Girl Scouts of the U.S.A. for its IMAGINE: Your STEM Future initiative, which is an educational curriculum full of activities relevant to the fields. It tackles a variety of topics including visual experiments like extracting DNA from a banana, all designed to introduce girls to the idea of a STEM career.

If this push toward STEM involvement continues (and we hope it will), we won't be surprised if young women come up with even more sophisticated projects. Who knows ??some of them may even leave?indelible marks in science and technology!

Wale Oyejide: Watch the Throne

You owe it to yourself to live an extraordinary life. At nights, your eyelids flutter open like curtains in a hotel room. You're there, but no one is home. There's a view of all the things you were meant to have laying before you. Behind the glass and beyond your reach. On any given Monday morning, you will sit at your desk as the fire in your belly threatens to engulf you. An all consuming ambition. To be someone and somewhere else. Anywhere. As long as its bigger. As long as you are better. As long as you are someone that everyone else wants to be. You will watch the clock. And you will wait for anything to happen.

So you build your new life the way that unseen hands built the pyramids. Piece-by-precarious-domino-piece. Waiting for the day that your future cascades triumphantly before you. Waiting for your window to open. Threatening to kick the door-in. There are those who doubt you. You might even be one of them. That's fine, I suppose. There are worse fates in life. After all, you could be perpetually ignored by history and everyone who isn't your mother. And No. We can't have that, now can we?

It pretty much comes down to this: We tell 100 lies a day. Most of them before noon. and 99 of them to ourselves. If you insist on acknowledging one truth in life, realize that you will never be who you were meant to be if you just wait for it to happen. You owe it to yourself to live an extraordinary life. Define that as you must, but let that be the one promise that you never break. Do more than watch the throne. Walk towards it. Seize the crown from the aged & heavy head it rests upon. Turn the page on the old you, and write what you've always known has been written for you. Because. No one else will do it for you.

Field Notes:

So. It's fair to concede that the Fall is here. We still have a few weeks before the over coats (and regrettable bubble goose jackets that will render the uncreative among us into live action versions of the Stay Puft Marshmellow Man) emerge. Until then, layering will be the life-blood of your wardrobe. On this brisk afternoon, I opted for a slim double breasted jacket with and scarf. There's nothing particularly earth shattering about the individual elements, but I think you'll find that one can appear striking when the right colors are subtly put together. Those of us who aren't opposed to making bold statements can rock accent-pieces like a red umbrella or canary-toned brief case. The point is to try not to overdo it. Particularly if you're new at this sort of thing. Most of us still have offices to report to, and can't really go off the deep end stylistically if we'd still like to be taken seriously. Self-Expression is great for those who are secure, but Costume is for adolescents still trying to find their way around the closet. When you give people a reason to turn their heads in your direction, make sure it isn't for the wrong reasons.

Caterpillar masters slowdown, posts record results (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? Caterpillar Inc muscled through murky economic conditions with a surprising 44 percent jump in quarterly profit, and forecast strong demand through next year in a sign of optimism for the global economy.

The company said on Monday that it expects full-year 2011 profit and revenue to set records on the back of surging sales for mining equipment and construction machinery in most markets around the world -- suggesting the underlying health of the global economy may not be as dire as is widely believed.

Caterpillar executives expect that momentum to carry into next year, with sales rising up to 20 percent above the expected record $58 billion in sales in this year.

"We're having a great year in 2011, and 2012 is shaping up to be better," said Caterpillar Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Doug Oberhelman.

Stronger demand at the world's largest heavy machinery manufacturer means more jobs and investment. Caterpillar said it hired nearly 5,000 people in the quarter.

The company typically breaks out its employment figures on a year-over-year basis, but this time it detailed the improvement from second quarter to third quarter. The comparison showed that Caterpillar is coupling earnings growth with a steady commitment to hiring.

"To the degree that we see continuing increases in demand for our products, it will lead to additional hiring," Chief Financial Officer Ed Rapp said in an interview. Caterpillar's production should continue to rise in the months to come.

The bullish news from the world's largest heavy machinery manufacturer, which follows strong forecasts from the likes of General Electric Co and United Technologies Corp, helped spark an overall rally in the market Monday. The stock gained about 5.5 percent, or $4.77, to $92.16 on the New York Stock Exchange, and accounted for a third of the 125-point gain seen Monday in the Dow Jones industrial average.

"When a big-name company like this reports numbers like these, that will help turn around talk about another recession," said Andrew Bodner, president of Double Diamond Investment Group in Parsippany, New Jersey.

ECONOMY 'NOT AS BAD' AS BILLED

"Record (third quarter) sales and profit results were particularly impressive to us in light of economic challenges in developed nations," Standard & Poor's equity analyst Michael Jaffe said. "Caterpillar's current trends also lead us to expect ongoing demand growth in 2012."

CFO Rapp said the current environment "looks very dissimilar to 2008," when the economy last fell into recession. He said that Caterpillar's finance arm is able to readily fund purchases of machinery, and he said dealers -- many of whom panicked with recession on the horizon a few years ago -- are showing considerable optimism.

"It's just not as bad as people want to make it out to be," Rapp said.

Caterpillar said it ended the third quarter in one of the healthiest positions in its recent history, with backlog orders standing at record levels and higher commodity prices leading to a favorable environment for its growing mining business, which is performing well in a variety of markets in all regions of the world.

"Although there is a good deal of economic and political uncertainty in the world, we are not seeing it much in our business at this point," CEO Oberhelman said. "We believe continued economic recovery, albeit a slow recovery, is the most likely scenario as we move forward."

PENT-UP DEMAND

The construction industry -- influenced by housing, commercial expansion and infrastructure development -- is currently a tale of two sectors. Emerging economies are scrambling to buy enough new equipment to keep up with booming demand. But in mature markets, where construction spending is well below historic trends, customers are simply buying equipment to replace aging machinery.

The company did caution that it is seeing a bit of a slowdown in China's demand levels due to measures the government is taking to tighten the economy. Caterpillar executives, speaking during a conference call with investors, said the slowdown is needed and indicated the company continues to build share in that market.

Rapp said Caterpillar is optimistic about ongoing policy discussions in the U.S. as well. The company expects a glut of "pent-up demand" for new construction to eventually spark new growth in more mature markets.

Caterpillar's forecast outlook indicates the company is successfully "coming to grips with a slower global economy," Longbow Research equity analyst Eli Lustgarten said. Caterpillar is able to succeed in the cloudy environment due to "very big growth outside of the United States and what's been a very strong (machinery) replenishment rate in the U.S.," he said.

Caterpillar reported third-quarter net income attributable to common shareholders of $1.14 billion, or $1.71 per share, compared with $792 million, or $1.22 per share, a year before.

Analysts on average had expected Caterpillar to earn $1.54 per share in the third quarter.

Sales rose 41 percent to $15.7 billion, which is a record, according to the company. Caterpillar earned $1.93 per share on $14.58 billion in sales excluding the impact of the acquisition of the Bucyrus mining business earlier this year.

It now expects annual sales of $58 billion, including the impact of its acquisition of Bucyrus, in 2011. Its previous forecast had been a range of $56 billion to $58 billion.

Profit is now expected to be $6.75 per share for the year, compared with a prior forecast of $6.25 to $6.75. Including the impact of Bucyrus, Caterpillar expects 2011 profit to reach $7.25 per share.

Yemen president calls in US ambassador

(AP) ? Yemen's president on Tuesday called in the U.S. ambassador and told him he would sign a deal to step down, a U.S. official said. The embattled leader, who has made that pledge several times before, spoke as violence shook his capital.

President Ali Abdullah Saleh informed Ambassador Gerald Feierstein of a new cease-fire, but clashes on the streets threw that into doubt. Activists said seven protesters were killed and 10 wounded.

It was the first meeting between Saleh and a U.S. ambassador since Saleh returned from Saudi Arabia last month, said U.S. State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland. Saleh left Yemen after an attack on his compound in early June left him badly wounded.

Nine months of mass protests calling for his resignation have moved his powerful Arab neighbors, with U.S. backing, to propose a plan allowing Saleh to step down in exchange for immunity from prosecution. That reflected a reversal for the U.S., which up to then had backed Saleh as an ally in its fight against al-Qaida in Yemen.

Nuland said Saleh confirmed he would sign the Gulf Cooperation Council plan for him to step down ? a claim he has made several times this year but then backed down at the last minute, infuriating both opponents and former allies.

She also said that Saleh confirmed that a cease-fire had been arranged with the opposition demonstrators, as announced on Yemen's state news agency's website.

On a statement on the website, Yemeni Vice President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi said that a cease-fire agreement was reached with the aim to "lift checkpoints, barricades and open schools ... to return normal life to the capital."

But late into Tuesday evening, troops were still firing into crowds of protesting civilians.

"It's not clear that that has been completely enforced on either side since then, but we do consider it a good step," Nuland told reporters. "There is still some fighting going on."

The protesters marched through the streets surrounding Change Square, a central intersection where the uprising against Saleh started in February.

"The people want to prosecute the butcher," the protesters chanted, and some held posters saying that after the death of Libya's Moammar Gadhafi, it was time for Saleh to "listen to your people."

The shooting broke out between Saleh's forces and renegade troops loyal to Maj. Gen. Ali Mohsen al-Ahmar, who defected to the opposition and whose forces protect the protesters.

There were concerns that the intensified fighting could undermine U.S. and Saudi efforts to fight Yemen's al-Qaida branch, considered by the U.S. to be the most dangerous of the terror network's affiliates after it plotted two failed attacks on American soil in recent years.

Also Tuesday, a Yemeni military plane crashed before landing at the al-Ammad air base near the southern city of Aden.

Four people on board were killed and 11 injured, according to a security official who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to reporters. The official said a technical problem might have caused the crash. He said there were eight Syrians and seven Yemenis on board.

Republicans plot early strategy to win back Ind. (AP)

INDIANAPOLIS ? Indiana Republicans took their first presidential loss in 40 years when Barack Obama carried the rock-ribbed GOP state. They're not about to let it happen again.

To return the state to the GOP column and nail it there, national Republicans say they plan to treat Indiana as if it were a long-standing battleground state. State Republicans hope to recreate the excitement that fired up underdog Indiana Democrats in 2008, when Hillary Clinton and Obama campaigned extensively throughout the state in a lengthy primary battle that dragged through May, creating a buzz that lasted until the general election.

By contrast, GOP nominee John McCain largely took Indiana for granted, focusing his energy on actual battleground states. Obama won the state in November by a little more than 30,000 votes.

Now the state is fairly crawling with GOP candidates.

The state party has sponsored four presidential forums since August. Those events brought Republican candidates like pizza magnate Herman Cain, Texas Gov. Rick Perry, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former U.S. Ambassador to China John Huntsman to Indiana and helped add 1,000 names to the party's e-mail list, party spokesman Pete Seat said.

House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin, whose YouTube videos about the budget crisis have given him a high profile, headlined the state party's fall fundraiser with Republican National Committee Chairman Reince Preibus last Friday. Cain visited the exclusive Columbia Club in downtown Indianapolis at the same time.

"It's nice that we're getting this kind of attention, it's creating interest in the election," Garry Petersen said last week, before listening to Perry speak to roughly 300 Republicans at the Columbia Club. Petersen and his wife, Terri, have long been active in Indiana Republican politics and said this is the most attention the state has gotten from Republican presidential candidates since the early 1980s.

"Our responsibility is to take care of our backyard here and to make sure that Indiana is fired up. We have a network of folks that are willing to sacrifice their time and just make sure that Barack Obama is one and done," Indiana Republican Party Chairman Eric Holcomb said.

Obama was the first Democrat to win Indiana since Lyndon Johnson in 1964. And even though they voted three separate Democratic governors into office in the intervening years, Hoosiers voters so reliably went for whomever the Republicans offered nationally for 44 years.

That near-certainty that any Republican presidential nominee would carry the state made both sides complacent until Obama's win in 2008. It has sent some of the most conservative representatives to Congress, including Dan Burton, Dan Coats and Dan Quayle, who was vice president under President George H.W. Bush.

To keep Indiana's reputation for producing conservative wins, the RNC plans to begin sending staffers and money to Indiana in the spring, said Rick Wiley, RNC political director. Republicans learned a hard lesson in Indiana in 2008 when they waited until after McCain's nomination had been locked up to begin organizing their campaign, he said.

"We're going to treat it as a battleground state. We're going to treat as though we're running behind in the state," Wiley said Tuesday. He would not say how much the national party plans to spend in the state or how many full-time staff they will pay for here.

For its part, the Obama campaign is touting a continued staff presence in Indiana that has been maintained since Obama took office. The re-election effort has maintained between two and four fulltime staffers in Indiana since 2008, according to an Indiana Democratic source who spoke on condition of anonymity because the Obama campaign does not want to release campaign staff numbers.

Those staffers have been running phone banks and helping the state's Democratic mayoral candidates, the source said. The Obama campaign is running weekly phone banks from the state Democratic party headquarters every Tuesday, according to the campaign website.

Obama's Indiana supporters say even if the president loses Indiana next year they are optimistic the network they built in 2008 has scared Republicans enough to at least draw away resources from other battleground states.

"I think they better" campaign hard in Indiana, said Kip Tew, a former Indiana Democratic Party chairman who led Obama's Indiana efforts in 2008. "They didn't the last time and they lost, so they probably learned a lesson."

In the meantime, both parties are using Indiana's statewide municipal elections as training ahead of next year's battle. Indiana Republicans have held four training sessions with mayoral candidates and volunteers, sending out executive director Justin Garrett to lead the events throughout the state.

"It's a long road ahead of us," GOP state chairman Holcomb said. "We need to take nothing for granted and make sure that Indiana turns red."

Groupon could find IPO a tough sale (Reuters)

NEW YORK/SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) ? Groupon Inc faces its toughest sales pitch next week when the daily deals website launches a roadshow to persuade investors to buy shares in its initial public offering.

Even after scaling back the issue and cutting the company's valuation in half, the IPO may struggle. Aside from recent regulatory and operational bumps, investors and analysts are troubled by Groupon's business model.

The concept is simple and potentially lucrative: sell a coupon for a local business and take a cut of the proceeds for facilitating the deal. But the market has attracted hundreds of rivals, including well-funded giants such as Google Inc (GOOG.O) and Amazon.com Inc (AMZN.O). Even Facebook was a Groupon rival for a short while before it shut down its effort.

"My views have not changed, despite the reduced valuation. We still have significant long-term questions about their business model," said Michael Cuggino, who helps manage about $15 billion at Permanent Portfolio Funds in San Francisco.

"They will get a lot of very hard questions from investors focused on their business outlook and profit expectations," Cuggino said, adding he would not be attending the road show and is "nowhere near" investing in Groupon.

Other investors said they were intrigued enough to attend the roadshow, but saw the IPO price as still on the high side.

Groupon plans to sell 30 million shares, or less than a 5 percent stake, at between $16 and $18 each, raising up to $540 million, according to a regulatory filing on Friday.

The midpoint would value Groupon at $10.8 billion, far less than the $20 billion initially expected but still above the $6 billion that Google offered to pay for the company last year.

"Groupon is an impressive business, but it's coming with a pretty rich price tag," said Ryan Jacob, manager of the Jacob Internet Fund, who watched Groupon's roadshow presentation online this morning.

"They're still young enough that the price seems too high to us -- even at the reduced level," Jacob added. "There's impressive growth potential but a lot of risks."

David Berman, a technology and retail specialist at hedge fund firm Durban Capital, said he would attend the roadshow but has reservations about the IPO.

"It's a big part of the puzzle in terms of the future of retail. Whether it's a good model and priced right is another matter," he told Reuters.

"The big issue for me is competition. Are there barriers to entry?" Berman added. "The other question is repeat business. It's one thing to buy a Groupon once and visit the merchant, but are customers coming back again and again?"

NEW BUSINESSES

Rather than address the question of when it might start turning a profit -- a key issue for investors -- Groupon executives in the online version of its roadshow described how they are trying out new businesses, such as travel deals and selling discounted products online.

"We've just started doing these things in the last few months," said Chief Executive Andrew Mason. "We're finding our customers are buying at the same kinds of conversion rates as they do with local. We've been able to translate this audience because we have this trusted brand."

The company launched Groupon Live, a partnership with Live Nation (LYV.N) to offer discounted concert tickets; Groupon Getaways, its travel business; and Groupon Goods, the discounted product market, in the third quarter.

"These are expected to grow and become a larger part of Groupon's overall business," Chief Financial Officer and former Amazon executive Jason Child said. "The success of these new categories greatly increases our market opportunity."

While the Chicago-based company's revenue and sales staff have grown dramatically since its founding in October 2008, it has never been profitable on a net basis. It made a narrower operating loss in the third quarter, after excluding stock-based compensation.

"There are a lot of beat up Internet stocks that are profitable. This one isn't," said a manager of a Bay Area tech-focused investment firm.

He said he would look at Groupon but didn't feel like he had to own it: "A $20 billion valuation is completely ludicrous. Ten billion is still too much."

The investor didn't want to be identified because he planned to meet with Groupon.

German satellite expected to hit Earth on weekend (AP)

BERLIN ? German scientists still don't know exactly when or where pieces of a defunct satellite hurtling toward the atmosphere will hit the Earth this weekend.

Andreas Schuetz, a spokesman for the German Aerospace Center, said Saturday the best estimate is that the ROSAT scientific research satellite will crash into the Earth sometime between late Saturday and Sunday up to 1200 GMT (8 a.m. EDT). An update is expected later Saturday.

Parts of the minivan-sized satellite will burn up during re-entry but up to 30 fragments weighing 1.87 tons (1.7 metric tons) could crash at speeds up to 280 mph (450 kph).

The satellite orbits every 90 minutes and it could hit Earth anywhere along its path ? a vast swath that includes much of the planet outside the poles.

Adobe Flash exploit allows websites to access your webcam without permission (Yahoo! News)

Your webcam can be a powerful tool for communicating with loved ones or even having a conversation with a world-famous luminary. But when that power is put into someone else's hands, it can have dire consequences. A new exploit of Adobe's Flash media application could potentially allow websites to access your webcam without your permission, opening the door for any number of unseemly people to peer into your world.

The exploit ? which only affects Macs thus far ? can be performed on web surfers using Safari and Firefox web browsers. The gaping hole in Adobe's security features was discovered by a Stanford computer science major named Feross Aboukhadijeh, who brought it to the attention of Adobe. After weeks without a response, Aboukhadijeh decided to make the glitch publicly known, in an attempt to force Adobe's hand. His?plan worked, and Adobe released a statement saying they were working on the problem, and the fix wouldn't require a Flash update.

In the video above, the intrepid college student showcases just how the exploit can be performed, calling attention to a gap in Adobe's coding that was somehow completely overlooked. This unfortunate oversight is just another reminder than no matter how secure your computer may seem, your safety is ultimately in the hands of the people behind the scenes.

Link Explored Between Colon Cancer, Bacterium (HealthDay)

TUESDAY, Oct. 18 (HealthDay News) -- Colorectal cancers contain high levels of a bacterium that may contribute to the cancer and could prove important in diagnosing, treating and preventing it, according to new research.

A team from the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Broad Institute in Boston analyzed nine samples of normal colon tissue and nine samples of colorectal cancer tissue and found unusually high numbers of Fusobacterium cells in the tumor samples.

The study was published online Oct. 17 in the journal Genome Research, which also includes a paper by Canadian researchers who reported similar findings.

"Tumors and their surroundings contain complex mixtures of cancer cells, normal cells, and a variety of microorganisms such as bacteria and viruses," Dr. Matthew Meyerson, senior author of the Dana-Farber/Broad Institute study, said in a Dana-Farber news release.

"Over the past decade, there has been an increasing focus on the relationship between cancer cells and their 'microenvironment,' specifically on the cell-to-cell interactions that may promote cancer formation and growth," he noted.

There's no definitive link between Fusobacterium and colorectal cancer, but there are hints that the bacterium may play a role in the cancer, said Meyerson, co-director of the Center for Cancer Genome Discovery at Dana-Farber and a professor of pathology at Harvard Medical School.

Previous research has suggested an association between Fusobacterium and inflammatory bowel diseases, such as ulcerative colitis, which can increase the risk of colon cancer.

"At this point, we don't know what the connection between Fusobacterium and colon cancer might be," Meyerson said. "It may be that the bacterium is essential for cancer growth, or that cancer simply provides a hospitable environment for the bacterium. Further research is needed to see what the link is."

If it's confirmed that Fusobacterium plays a role in the onset of colorectal cancer, it would be the first time that any microorganism has been found to be involved in this type of cancer.

Colorectal cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States. More than 141,000 people in the nation will be diagnosed with the disease this year, and it will kill more than 49,000 people, according to the American Cancer Society.

Monday morning(ish) KO: Kimbo Slice?s boxing win

Though most of the boxing world was focused on Bernard Hopkins this weekend, former UFC heavyweight Kimbo Slice had his second boxing match this weekend. It didn't take long.

In just 47 seconds, he took out Tay Bledsoe, a tall cruiserweight whose record is now 2-4. With two wins now under his belt in the ring, is Slice a full-fledged boxer, or is he still a former mixed martial artist who is now trying boxing? Tell us in the comments or on Facebook.

PFT: Man arrested for slapping Bears' Hester

Carson PalmerAP

During Monday?s Raiders-Bengals edition of PFT Live, FOX?s Jay Glazer said that the Bengals get a second first-round pick if the Raiders win a playoff game in 2011.? Otherwise, the Bengals get a first-round pick in 2012 and a second-round pick in 2013.? ESPN?s Chris Mortensen also has reported these basic terms.

Here are a few quick takes regarding the deal.

1.? With the new CBA implementing a real rookie wage scale, first-round picks are worth more than they were before 2011, especially in the upper reaches of the round.? Teams can now acquire blue-chip talent at far lower pay, squatting on them for at least five years.? At a time when not many players have been yielding first-round picks via trade, the possibility that the Raiders will give up two of them for Palmer is stunning.

2.? Even if Palmer stinks and the Raiders otherwise make it to the postseason and win one game, the compensation becomes two first-rounders.? It?s unknown whether the Raiders pressed for a trigger based on Palmer?s performance, but given the way he played last year, it would have made sense to get such protection.

2.? The Broncos may be kicking themselves for sending receiver Brandon Lloyd to the Rams for a sixth-round pick that can become a fifth-round pick.? After the Palmer deal, it seems that maybe the Broncos could have done better.

3.? Or not.? The Palmer trade could make it difficult if not impossible to get any more trades accomplished before this year?s deadline, since the team with the player who would be traded will (or at least should) start the talks by pointing out what the Raiders gave up for Palmer.

4.? Palmer reportedly has said he?ll never again set foot in Paul Brown Stadium.? Under the current scheduling formula, he will next year.

5.? If the Raiders win the AFC West and the Bengals capture a wild-card berth, Cincy could face a no-lose situation in the postseason, if the playoff tree sends Cincinnati to Oakland.? Win the game and advance, lose the game and get a second first-round pick.

6.? As Paul Gutierrez of CSN Bay Area pointed out during PFT Live, Raiders coach Hue Jackson clearly is running the show in Oakland.? And he?s taking a big risk that Palmer won?t be worth the price that was paid.? Which could eventually limit Jackson?s influence, if Palmer doesn?t deliver.

7.? As Joe Reedy of the Cincinnati Enquirer pointed out during PFT Live, the Bengals ultimately can thank the Browns for helping the Bengals get up to two first-round picks for Palmer.? If the Browns don?t break Jason Campbell?s collarbone, Palmer doesn?t get traded until 2012, at the earliest.

8.? Palmer?s decision not to file retirement papers made it easier for the deal to go down quickly, since Palmer didn?t have to send a letter to the Commissioner with a request to be reinstated to the active roster.

9.? If receiver Chad Ochocinco gets cut by the Patriots, his beeline to the Bay may not happen.? There?s a belief that Palmer has had enough of Chad, and that Palmer wouldn?t want to play with him again.

10.? Terrelle Pryor?s career is now on hold indefinitely, unless he enters the game in a Wildcat package or plays another position.

11.? Carson Palmer eventually got what he wanted, without drawing much criticism.? As others in the media have pointed out, it?s hard to imagine other players essentially quitting on their team to force a trade and not being called out aggressively.

(AP) ? Every race car driver heads onto the track understanding this race could be the last and hoping it won't be.

On Sunday, IndyCar drivers got a harsh reminder when the worst happened to one of their own.

Two-time Indianapolis 500 winner Dan Wheldon died when his car got caught up in a 15-car pileup, sailed over another vehicle and smashed into a catch fence at IndyCar's season-ending race at Las Vegas Motor Speedway.

"Things happen in this kind of racing," said Wade Cunningham, also caught up in the wreck. "It's so close. Not much room for error. I was near the front of what caused all this, so I'm not thrilled about it. At this point, whose fault it was is kind of immaterial."

The green flag had barely stopped waving when disaster struck.

Wheldon, driving from the back of the field for a chance at $5 million, was moving through the pack when he drove into a tangle of cars careening off each other in every direction.

Unable to avoid the massive wreck unfolding before him, Wheldon clipped another car and went hurtling through the air, his car bursting into flames as it flew into a fence.

After just 11 laps, the race was over. Two hours later, track officials announced that Wheldon was dead. The Englishman was 33.

"One minute you're joking around at driver intros and the next, Dan's gone," said Dario Franchitti, whose wife, actress Ashley Judd, had to bring him a box of tissues. "I lost, we lost, a good friend. Everybody in the IndyCar series considered him a friend. He was such a good guy. He was a charmer."

With the speed ? close to 225 mph during practice ? and a crowded 34-car field, a big worry was aggressive driving early in the 200-lap race.

Chaos started when two cars touched tires coming around turn 2 and almost no one had time to react.

Within seconds, several cars burst into flames and debris covered the track nearly halfway up the straightaway. Some points of impact were so devastating workers had to patch holes in the asphalt.

Video replays showed Wheldon's car turning over as it went airborne and sailed into what's called the catch fence, which sits over a barrier designed to give a bit when cars make contact. Rescue workers were at Wheldon's car quickly, some furiously waving for more help to get to the scene.

"It's unfortunate that early on in the race they've got to be racing so close. ...," Team Penske owner Roger Penske said. "You always worry about those at these mile-and-a-halves at the speed and with this many cars."

Three other drivers, including championship contender Will Power, were hurt in the pileup.

Wheldon was airlifted from the track to University Medical Center; news of his death came from IndyCar CEO Randy Bernard:

"IndyCar is very sad to announce that Dan Wheldon has passed away from unsurvivable injuries," he said. "Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today. IndyCar, its drivers and owners, have decided to end the race."

In his honor, drivers, many sobbing openly, took part in a five-lap salute around the 1.5-mile oval as thousands of fans stood and cheered from the grandstand.

Also injured in the crash were JR Hildebrand and Pippa Mann. Both will remain in the hospital overnight. IndyCar said Mann was being treated for a burn to her right pinkie finger and will be released Monday morning; Hildebrand was awake and alert but will be held overnight for further evaluation. Power was evaluated and released.

An autopsy was planned Monday for Wheldon.

"I'll tell you, I've never seen anything like it," Ryan Briscoe said. "The debris we all had to drive through the lap later, it looked like a war scene from Terminator or something. I mean, there were just pieces of metal and car on fire in the middle of the track with no car attached to it and just debris everywhere. So it was scary, and your first thoughts are hoping that no one is hurt because there's just stuff everywhere. Crazy."

IndyCar has not had a fatality since Paul Dana was killed at Homestead in 2006 during a crash in a morning warmup. Wheldon won the race later that day.

The accident appeared to start when Cunningham's car swerved on the track and Hildebrand drove over the left rear of Cunningham's car. Hildebrand appeared to go airborne, and Cunningham's car shot up into the wall, setting off a chain reaction among the cars behind him.

Some of those cars slowed, others didn't, and others spun in front of Wheldon and Power. There was so much confusion on the track it was hard to tell who was driving what car.

Power appeared to fly over Alex Lloyd's car, his ride rolling into the catch fence and landing on its right side. His in-car camera showed one of the front tires coming toward him in the cockpit.

Wheldon then appeared to drive over a car driven by Paul Tracy, who seemed to be slowing down. Wheldon, however, went airborne and spun into the fence.

"It was like a movie scene which they try to make as gnarly as possible," said Danica Patrick, making her final IndyCar start. "It was debris everywhere across the whole track. You could smell the smoke. You could see the billowing smoke on the back straight from the car. There was a chunk of fire that we were driving around. You could see cars scattered."

Wheldon, who came to the United States from England in 1999, won 16 times in his IndyCar career and was the series champion in 2005.

Despite winning this year's Indy 500, Wheldon couldn't put together a full-time ride this season but had a deal in the works for 2012.

Andretti Autosport, the team with which Wheldon won the 2005 Indy 500, had agreed to a contract early Sunday for Wheldon to replace Patrick next season. The deal was supposed to be signed after the race.

"Back when he was with the team in '05, we referred to the team as The Beatles because it was such perfect harmony (with his teammates) ? and with Dan coming back, there was talk of putting The Beatles back together," said John Lopes, chief marketing officer and VP of marketing for Andretti Autosport. "So today is devastating. We not only lost a future teammate, but a longtime teammate. It's so sad. He's going to be sorely missed and fondly remembered."

Wheldon landed in the Las Vegas race thanks to Bernard's promise of $5 million to any moonlighting driver who could win the IndyCar season finale. Although there were no takers, Bernard refused to scrap the idea and Wheldon was declared eligible for the prize, which would have been split with a fan.

Asked about speed after the crash, Wheldon's former boss Chip Ganassi said, "There'll be plenty of time in the offseason to talk about that. Now is not the time to talk about that."

And Franchitti said: "I agree. We'll discuss that and sort it out."

But driver Oriol Servia didn't mince words: "We all had a bad feeling about this place in particular just because of the high banking and how easy it was to go flat. And if you give us the opportunity, we are drivers and we try to go to the front. We race each other hard because that's what we do," he said. "We knew it could happen, but it's just really sad."

Wheldon had been providing blog posts for USA Today in the days leading up to the Las Vegas race, and in one posted Saturday to the newspaper's website he spoke of how he expected Sunday to be "pure entertainment."

"This is going to be an amazing show," Wheldon wrote. "The two championship contenders, Dario Franchitti and Will Power, are starting right next to each other in the middle of the grid. Honestly, if I can be fast enough early in the race to be able to get up there and latch onto those two, it will be pure entertainment. It's going to be a pack race, and you never know how that's going to turn out."

The accident spoiled what Bernard had hoped would be a showcase event for the struggling IndyCar Series.

The second-year CEO worked the entire season on turning the finale into a spectacle, and said he would offer his resignation to the IndyCar board of directors if ABC's broadcast didn't pull a .8 ranking. His goal was to improve upon last year's horrible television rating for the season finale and give the series some momentum for a strong season in 2013 with the introduction of a new car and new manufacturers.

So Bernard poured everything into Las Vegas, renting the speedway from owner Bruton Smith and agreeing to promote the event himself. He landed enough sponsorship to at least break even, and the $5 million challenge bought him an enormous amount of publicity the entire year.

Bernard got the Las Vegas Strip to close to stage a parade of cars, and hosted industry parties and a blackjack tournament to boost interest in the race. He even got MGM Grand Resorts to offer a pair of tickets to anyone staying this weekend in one of the chain's 14 properties.

But what was hoped to be a day of celebration quickly turned somber.

When drivers returned to the track for the tribute laps, Wheldon's No. 77 was the only one on the towering scoreboard. Franchitti sobbed uncontrollably as he got back into his car for the memorial ride. The sound of "Danny Boy" echoed around the track, followed by "Amazing Grace." Hundreds of crew workers and representatives from each team stood at attention in honor of Wheldon.

"What can you say? We're going to miss him," Ganassi said. "Everybody in IndyCar died a little today."

CDC: Add $2 per drink for US excessive drinking

(AP) ? The toll of excessive drinking works out to about $2 per drink, in terms of medical expenses and other costs to society, according to a new federal research.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention study calculated societal costs from binge and heavy drinking beyond what consumers pay at the bar or liquor store. It's the first such federal estimate in more than a dozen years.

The study looked at costs that included ? among other things ? lost work productivity, property damage from car crashes, expenditures for liver cirrhosis and other alcohol-associated medical problems, and money spent on incarceration of drunk drivers and criminals using alcohol.

The CDC estimated excessive drinking cost society nearly $224 billion in 2006, the most recent year for which all necessary statistics were available. That worked out to about $1.90 per drink, 80 cents of which was spent by federal, state or local governments, the researchers estimated. The rest came from drinkers, their families, private health insurers, employers, crime victims and others.

Most of that was related to binge drinking, in which four or five alcoholic beverages are consumed on one occasion.

"Binge drinking results in binge spending," said CDC Director Dr. Thomas Frieden.

CDC officials noted that while some health benefits have been associated with, say, a glass of wine each day, there are no health benefits linked to excessive drinking. They also said the new study likely represents an underestimate of the total cost.

Smoking has been estimated to cost society about $193 billion annually. An older study estimated the cost of not exercising to be around $150 billion.

The study was released Monday by the American Journal of Preventive Medicine.
