Family Curator - Home - Book Review: More Genea-Fiction with Prof ...

In the mood for more mystery after last week's interview with genealogical crime author Steve Robinson? Jefferson Tayte's next adventure is slated for spring 2013, and in the meantime you might enjoy browsing through an engaging mystery series by Sarah R. Shaber featuring Professor Simon Shaw, a young history professor at a small college in Raleigh, North Carolina.

In the debut title, Simon Said , a body is found on the archeological dig of a local historic home, but it's not as old as it should be. The unidentified remains appear to be from the 1920s instead of three centuries earlier. Shaw is called in as an expert consultant for his skill has a historical researcher and finds himself reluctantly drawn in to a mystery he can't resist.

Like any genealogist, Shaw knows he has to flesh out the family tree to discover the roots of the story, and therein lies the puzzle.

I enjoyed the well-developed characters in the novel, as much as the mystery. Simon and his faculty friends are interesting people who you grow to care about, and Simon's difficulty coping with his new divorced status is realistic in it's heartache. The mystery itself pulled me along through the pages and made it a quick, but enjoyable read.

I was glad to find that the next book in the series, Snipe Hunt, was also available in the Amazon Kindle Owner's Lending Library to borrow for free for Prime members.

Snipe Hunt ?is set on the North Carolina Outer Banks where Simon joins his friends for a beach house Thanksgiving holiday. When the body of a local man is found in the water with a cache of gold coins, local interest is revived in old tales of shipwrecks and booty. Simon is becoming more comfortable in his role as "forensic historian" with this experience, but he still manages to appear ready to go back to his quiet uneventful life at any time.

Happily (for the readers), people just keep turning up dead and Shaw's adventures continue in three more mysteries. The series now numbers five books, and it's anyone's guess if Shraber will continue with more. Her latest publications have turned to historical fiction featuring Louise Pearlie, a young widow working in Washington, D.C. as a clerk in the OSS (to become the CIA). Louise's War and Louise's Gamble are in my list of Books to Read this Summer!

Yoga; Another Type of Soccer Fitness | SoccerCleats101 - The Blog

Soccer Yoga

After doing one 30 minute session of yoga I knew I had to do my research and see if Yoga could be a good complement to a soccer players usual work out. The half hour yoga session made the normal strength training that I do feel like a walk in the park. I have found that not only is it a great compliment but many professionals swear by it, Ryan Giggs is probably one of the biggest professionals who practices yoga. Listen to what he has to say below.

It tests parts of your body that you just don?t use in football. The first time I did it, about five years ago, I was completely knackered. I went home from the training ground and slept for three hours in the afternoon. I actually dreaded yoga for the first year because it made muscles I didn?t know I had ache, although I know some of the lads think it?s really a bit soft.

Another player to credit Yoga for his extended career is Brad Friedel, goalkeeper for Tottenham Hotspurs. He is 41 years old and still playing strong. Former Spur?s manager Harry Redknapp even brought in a yoga instructor to help give Tottenham an extra edge after seeing the wonders yoga has worked for Brad Friedel.

What is Yoga?? Yoga is an ancient practice that originates from India. It was first found in Hinduism and Buddhism, used by them to practice self discipline, achieve spiritual acuity, strengthen the body and sharpen the mind. In modern times it has become increasingly westernized, more focus has been put into the physical and mental benefits of yoga. It can be high intensity or low intensity and the sessions can be relaxing or result in a real work out as I have experienced.

Yoga is thought of by most people as just stretching but it is much more than that. It creates balance in the body by increasing strength, flexibility and muscular endurance through a series of poses.

What Yoga Can do For Soccer?
1. Help reduce injury
2. Increase flexibility
3. Bolster endurance
4. Strengthen the core
5. Improve joint strength through low impact exercise.

These are just some of the benefits of yoga for soccer players. Over all yoga has positive aspects for all areas of life and not just athletics. Check out the USMNT during their yoga session.

I for one am planning to?implement yoga into my work outs. I was really surprised at how much of a work out I got out of it. It improves over all health and can boost performance, so why not give it a shot. Yoga is easy enough to get into. There are classes and groups all across the states, not to mention the hundreds of video yoga sessions. All you need is a mat and you are set to go. If you find that one of the routines doesn?t quite work for you there are thousands of them out there.

Make Sure you head over to Jimthesoccerguys facebook page and give it a like for all the latest blog updates.?

PFT: Bears, Forte agree to long-term deal

Jonathan Vilma Portrait ShootGetty Images

In many respects, Saints linebacker Jonathan Vilma?s effort to block his suspension while his lawsuit unfolds looks a lot like the successful attempt to delay the StarCaps suspensions.? But Vilma?s case has one significant difference.

Along with the obvious (and potent) contention that there?s no way to restore the lost games to Vilma?s career if he ultimately is exonerated, Vilma claims that the suspension will jeopardize his medical condition.

The motion and the signed affidavit from Vilma, copies of which PFT has obtained, explain that Vilma has an injury that requires rehabilitation under the supervision of the Saints medical staff.

Vilma explains that he suffered a knee injury on September 16, 2011, during a non-contact practice drill.? ?I was affected by that injury throughout the remainder of the Season and I believe I was only able to play at 70-75 percent,? Vilma alleges.? ?I was forced to miss five games due to the injury and played in three or four other games against the advice of doctors.?

Vilma explains that he underwent arthroscopic surgery in November, and that after the? 2011 season ended he underwent osteoarticular transfer system surgery.? ?Essentially,? Vilma explains, ?the surgeon removed cartilage from the non-weight bearing side of my knee and placed the cartilage into the weight-bearing part of my knee where I had lost cartilage.?? The surgery aims to have the replaced cartilage become absorbed into the side of the knee where it is needed.

The affidavit details Vilma?s rehab, which included not being able to run for four full months.? Eventually, he received a recommendation from Yankees third baseman Alex Rodriguez for a doctor in Germany, who removes anti-inflammatory agents from the patient?s blood and then injects the anti-inflammatory agents back into the patient.

Vilma says that he underwent the procedure during the week of July 2, and that it immediately helped reduce the swelling, allowing Vilma to begin running.

To continue his rehab, Vilma says he needs to have access to Saints trainer Scottie Patten, who supervises Vilma?s efforts on a daily basis.? ?I am very concerned that being unable to work with Mr. Patten will jeopardize the rest of my football career and that my condition could deteriorate without his supervision and guidance,? Vilma contends.

It?s an intriguing argument.? Though access to Patten should have no bearing on whether Vilma?s suspension is upheld, it?s another strong reason to delay the suspension until Vilma?s lawsuit aimed at overturning the suspension is resolved.? If, in the end, he wins the lawsuit, Vilma necessarily would have lost important access to a man who can help Vilma work together being healthy enough to further risk his health playing football.

The only problem with the argument is that it gives rise to a potential baby-splitting outcome from Judge Helen G. Berrigan.? She could decide to allow the suspension to remain in place as to practices and games, but to order the NFL to permit Vilma to have access to Patten while the lawsuit proceeds.

Either way, a decision is needed soon.? The Saints open camp in eight days ? and Vilma is already nearly two weeks removed from being able to work with Patten.

How to do Business Negotiations with Chinese Companies | The ...

Negotiating with Chinese Companies is crucial especially in this era where more buyers are sourcing for various merchandise directly from Chinese manufacturers. In business, negotiation is never that easy, but it can prove to be very hard especially when you have to deal with a foreign culture. As much as so many things are negotiable in China you are guaranteed better results if you know how to deal with the manufacturers. The more information you have concerning the culture backgrounds, positions, pressures, etc about your business associate in China the better you can use that information as a negotiating tool to get what you want.

The Chinese manufacturers are very clever. They clearly know everything that you as the buyer need to know about their products and if you are not adequately prepared, they can use this against you. Just before you embark into real life negotiations try to use the most trusted buyer-to-buyer websites in the e-market for market reviews on a particular product you wish to order. This will help you to have clear-cut details on the products you wish to buy and therefore eliminate the chances of miscommunication with your Chinese counterpart.

When Negotiating With Chinese Suppliers it is good advice that you stick to the contract agreement. Bear in your mind that Chinese manufacturers love to build up solid and lasting business relationships even after the trading contract has long been signed. The reason is that Chinese business contracts are just a platform for future negotiations. Most importantly to the Chinese business community, business negotiations is just a part of relationship culture process in China that is commonly referred to as ?guanxi? that is translated as ?if you scratch my back, I might scratch yours?. Try to give your partners fair prices on products as opposed to get lower prices on goods.

Technical behavior is another thing to consider when negotiating With Chinese suppliers. Many multinational companies in China tend to have a high rating of credibility and reputation than their small and medium sized counterparts. They also use resources to invest in R&D something, which makes these suppliers more acceptable in the negotiation desk. Most of the Chinese companies have really opened up to the new opportunities offered by the ICT industry, something that helps them to look for more innovative ideas even from among the small industries. Negotiations methods of the southern China are different from northern China.

The other most important thing you have to know when Negotiating with Chinese Companies is the social behavior. Fact is, it harder to lie to a friend than a stranger. Social status plays an important role in business negotiations in China. The higher up you are as far as social status is concerned the higher chances you have to get a favorable deal in the negotiations desk. Because of many Chinese businesses adoption of the western negotiation patterns of business, the need for personal relationships is slowly diminishing. As a foreign business negotiator, you have to have exceptional interpersonal skills and understand the value of trust.

What are you think about it? Please ?leave a response in comment?.

Homie? Lover? Friend? | datingish

Homie? Lover? Friend?

It's been a few weeks. The 8 a.m. "good morning" texts. Lunches during work breaks. Dinners after long shifts and the weekend movie nights. Everything thus far has been smooth sailing. The "getting to know you" phase; where nothing's too complicated and everything flows because you don't know one another well enough for there to be much else. But, then the questions get redundant and soon you start to wonder about the future of the company you keep and ask yourself the pivotal question: What are we?

This seems to be the question so many people want the answers to after several dates and hour long phone calls. But the fear of making things "complicated" often pushes the breaks on such a simple question.

So what is it? At what point does all the effort of putting your best foot forward actually result in a meaning of it all? Let's not be coy. Women are often the ones who voice this question to begin with. Men are able to ride the wave and not give much thought into labels or defining "hanging out." But like anyone should, women need to know where they stand at all times. It's how we're programmed.

We'd rather you let us know what it is we're doing, so there is no need to guess. And trust me, if you let us, we will SURELY draw our own conclusions which is often the problem we face in so many of relationships, simply because we fail to realize that men are not wired like we are.?

Let me be less vague.?

Over time and relationships, I've learned a few valuable things about men. One, they don't like games. As much as we, as women, think they do, they don't. The guessing games we play as women, men would rather bypass. To them, it's just... "Come right out and say it! Why should I have to guess what you're feeling or know what you're thinking when you have the vocal ability to tell me yourself?"

As simple as it may seem, women often find that hard to handle. I mean let's be real ladies, how many arguments have surfaced resulting from this very issue?

Lastly, two, just because you may see something resulting from the dates, doesn't mean he does. Like I pointed out prior, men like to go with the flow. Nothing too complicated, no pressure. Yes, he may like you, but that doesn't necessarily mean he's looking for a relationship. You could very well just be fun to hang out with. A distraction he's not used to.?

I say all this to conclude: Dating is a process in which you take the time to get to know someone to see what relationship may form. It may be friendship, partnership or simply sexual. Whatever it may be, these things need to be defined within a reasonable time of money spent and hours in each other's company. The last thing you'd want is to go through a whole ordeal and have that taunting question of where you stand.

Man or woman, no one likes to feel like they're being played or taken for a ride. Labels may not be what everyone wants, but trust me, they're necessary to place boundaries. You want people to know their place and where you see or don't see things going.

So if asked at any given point about the status of the relationship with the person you're seen with most frequently, do you honestly know your position? Are you the homie, lover, or friend?

Child diabetes levels almost four times higher in China than in US

ScienceDaily (July 5, 2012) ? A study led by researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill found Chinese teenagers have a rate of diabetes nearly four times greater than their counterparts in the United States. The rise in the incidence of diabetes parallels increases in cardiovascular risk, researchers say, and is the result of a Chinese population that is growing increasingly overweight.

The study led by Barry Popkin, Ph.D., W.R. Kenan Jr. Distinguished Professor of nutrition at UNC's Gillings School of Global Public Health, and Chinese researchers, used data from the China Health and Nutrition Survey (CHNS), the longest ongoing study of its kind in China. Between 1989 and 2011, the study followed more than 29,000 people in 300 communities throughout China, with surveys conducted in 1989, 1991, 1993, 1997, 2000, 2004, 2006, 2009 and 2011. The CHNS project was a joint undertaking by the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the Chinese Center for Disease Control (CCDC) National Institute of Nutrition and Food Safety.

The findings appear online in Obesity Reviews. Early View Section and will be published in the September issue (Obesity Reviews Volume 13, Issue 9, September 2012).?

China has experienced unprecedented economic growth in the past two decades, but the study finds that at the same time, China has seen equally dramatic changes in the weight, diets and physical activity levels of its people. UNC-CCDC researchers followed a randomly selected sample representing 56 percent of the Chinese population in 2009 and found large increases in overweight and cardiometabolic risk factors.

"What is unprecedented is the changes in diet, weight and cardiovascular risk for children age 7 and older," said Popkin. "These estimates highlight the huge burden that China's health care system is expected to face if nothing changes."

The UNC-CCDC team observed rates of diabetes of 1.9 percent and pre-diabetes levels of 14.9 percent in Chinese children age 7-17. Researchers noted that high levels of glycosylated hemoglobin (HbA1c) were found in the children's blood. HbA1c is a measure of the average plasma-glucose concentration over time.

"The findings suggest a very high burden of chronic disease risk starting at a young age, with 1.7 million Chinese children ages 7-18 having diabetes and another 27.7 million considered prediabetic," Popkin said. "In addition, more than one-third of children under age 18 had high levels of at least one cardiometabolic risk factor."

Comparing the Chinese data with data from the United States based on National Health and Nutrition Survey (NHANES) results, the authors found that diabetes and inflammation rates were higher in the Chinese pediatric population than in the U.S. pediatric population or in other Asian countries. Researchers found 1.9 percent of Chinese children age 12-18 had diabetes, compared to 0.5 percent of children in the U.S. The study also found great disparity with respect to inflammation, a key cardiovascular risk factor; 12.1 percent of Chinese adolescents showed a high inflammation risk, compared to 8.5 percent of adolescents in the U.S.

"The number of individuals with high levels of at least one cardiovascular risk factor increased to 85 percent in individuals age 40 and older," said Penny Gordon-Larsen, Ph.D., professor of nutrition in UNC's Gillings School of Global Public Health. "Of even greater concern is the fact that we see these high levels of risk in individuals living across the entire country -- in rural and urban, as well as high and low-income areas. So the impending health care costs and implications are immense."

These results reinforce earlier research by the authors that found higher levels of obesity emerging in the past decade among the poor and those living in rural areas of China.

The new study is titled "The expanding burden of cardiometabolic risk in China: the China Health and Nutrition Survey."

Research assistant professor of nutrition Shufa Du, Ph.D. and professor of nutrition Linda Adair, Ph.D., both of UNC's Gillings School of Global Public Health also co-authored the study.

Co-authors from China include Shegkai Yan, Guangzhou Improve Medical Instruments Co., Ltd., Guangzhou; Jiang Li, M.D., Department of Laboratory Medicine, China-Japan Friendship Hospital, Beijing; and Bing Zhang, Ph.D., Public Health Nutrition Department, National Institute of Nutrition and Food Safety, Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, Beijing.

The study is funded by the National Institutes of Health with additional funding from the CCDC.

America?s Patent Crisis

But in the thriving digital sector, patents don?t work at all, and more patents are likely to cause more litigation rather than more innovation. A product like the iPhone that was world-changing and awesome five years ago seems boring today, leaving people to wonder what?s next. In this space, where the capital costs of innovating are relatively low, invention is driven by competition not monopolies. Practical engineers working in high-tech understand that the patent war is bad for innovation, but disturbingly the big corporate players in the industry are reconciling to it?costing American consumers billions and stifling startups. The government hands out patents so freely that there?s no way to make anything without violating every other big player?s patents. That?s fine for established firms that have had time to assemble (or buy) vast patent arsenals. But it?s a disaster for new entrants, who know that any successful new product they make will be taxed by a storm of litigation once it becomes popular. The real risk of ?foregone innovation? is that resources will be shunted away from making great products into hiring lawyers and away from investing in promising new firms into investing in old ones with legacy patent arsenals.

A robot with 200 hours of power? DARPA wants one

    6 hrs.

The U.S. military?s futuristic research arm has launched a program to get more productivity out of its robots in a bid to make them more compatible companions on the battlefield.

DARPA?s robots include one that can haul hundreds of pounds of gear across rugged terrain and another that can quickly disarm roadside bombs ? good chores for robots instead of humans. The problem is the machines are lazy, working for about 10 minutes before they demand a re-charge break.

The agency?s M3 Actuation program aims to achieve a 2,000 percent increase in the efficiency of power transmission and application in robots.

To get there, the agency suggests researchers look to human and animal models, whose bones, muscles and tendons have evolved to work together and use as little energy as possible.?

?If robotic actuation can be made to approach the efficiency of human and animal actuation, the range of practical robotic applications will greatly increase and robot design will be less limited by power plant considerations,? DARPA said in a statement announcing the program.

According to the statement, the agency is seeking proposals for two tracks:?

    • Track 1 is to demonstrate develop and demonstrate high-efficiency actuation technology that will allow robots similar to the government-furnished ones in the DARPA Robotics Challenge to have a 20 times longer endurance when running on untethered battery power. (Currently about 10 to 20 minutes.)
    • Track 2 aims to improve the efficiency of actuators at scales larger and smaller than applicable to the DRC GFE platform.

Design approaches will be shared at the DRC live competition scheduled for December 2013 and final systems will be demonstrated at DRC live in December 2014. More details are available from DARPA.?

IBM Labs pitches the future of augmented reality shopping with mobile app prototype

IBM Labs pitches the future of augmented reality shopping with mobile app prototype

From the same company that brought you the ThinkPad and the tank of a keyboard known as the Model M, today IBM is demonstrating its latest consumer development: a mobile shopping app. As odd as that sounds, it's no secret that Big Blue employs some rather brilliant folk, and now the company is looking to combine augmented reality with your everyday shopping habits. While still merely a prototype, the app will allow consumers to pan product aisles with their smartphone camera and view additional details on the screen. As IBM puts it, shoppers may input their own needs and preferences into the app, which can accommodate a wealth of information such as allergens, sugar content and bio-degradable packaging. Through partnerships with retailers, IBM also hopes to integrate promotions and loyalty schemes into the app, which it states will help stores better understand the buying habits of individual consumers. So there you have it, the future of shopping, as brought to you by IBM. As for the full PR, you'll find it after the break.
